AMD Announces Phenom X6 CPUs and 890FX Chipset

Wow, those prices are crazy.... and the overclocking is insane. Those chips are capable of 4GHz stable, which is astounding given it is an AMD processor. Anand reports his 4GHz 1095T was able to finally able to beat the 975X at stock for 3D encoding. It only required 2 extra cores and an...

The Vicious Cycle of Gaming DRM

Great editorial, Brett! I agree with all points you've made. Something not directly touched on is the gamers that attempt to take the high road by claiming they would never have bought the game, but they do hurt the actual publisher. Sure, digital downloads mean no physical copy was ever...

Should Journalists Disclose Sponsored Trips to Events?

Interesting video! Nice to see some frank, honest thoughts from a well-traveled PR representative on that question. Some good and valid points made. I will say that this is another reason I like Ars Technica, they have a strict policy to not accept a dime for event costs. Granted they are a...

    AMD Phenom X6 1090T - $250!

Given TD likes to charge insane amounts for shipping, I haven't ordered anything from them in years. The last time I was price shopping a 980X processor TigerDirect quoted me $16 for standard delivery... most places ship it for free. And I know given I've mailed Core i7 processors in the past...

Valve Takes Steam's UI Update Out of Beta

The library thing is actually fairly decent, it just took me a bit to realize you can use it several different ways. After clicking the Library name the user can click one of four subheadings under it to change if they want to view games, media, tools, etc... But also, they can select from three...

    Problemo!

I'm not an expert on power supplies so I can't say with certainty, but if the shocks only started recently then I'd assume it was a sign that components on both PSUs were starting to go south... in otherwords starting to weaken and or fail.

    Problemo!

Going by Google, Pakistan seems to use two types of plugs... 2 prongs, then 3 prongs. Without the third prong the PSU cannot ground itself to earth, hence why you would be sensing or feeling a shock when you touch the case. Instead of grounding the case to earth, it would be grounding itself to...

    Which One?

Nice luck with that memory!! My poor Core i7 920 goes unstable above a 3600MHz Uncore speed, but I've never gotten 1800Mhz RAM stable regardless. 1600MHz CAS 7 as as far as she goes. You definitely want to try a 1T command rate if the RAM can hold one. :)

    Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler

Nice review Bill! I well agree on the Editor's Choice! I love this cooler... it is how a real cooler should be manufactured. The Heat pipes are soldered to the fins, not pressed as in most heatsinks. Out of the three types they appear to use sintered heat pipes, which are the most expensive...

    Problem with video files....

Does this occur if you use http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ? VLC uses only it's built in audio/video codecs and I've seen it work on systems that were suffering from codec soup or using codecs that weren't configured properly. If that doesn't work, try using a different port for your computer...

    Problemo!

The only Cooler Master PSUs I would have recommended would of been their UCP (Ultimate Circuit Protection) models. These were the first PSUs to be 80 PLUS Silver rated for efficiency, are quiet, and are only offered in 700W or larger sizes. I say would have, because my own 1100W UCP unit...

    Gizmodo Editor's Tech Gear Seized

Jesus.... I briefly heard that they had gotten their hands on a model, but other sites such as Ars and others came away thinking Apple arranged the entire meeting/leak... nobody mentioned Gizmondo paid $5,000 for the thing. It's one thing for someone to show off the phone covertly in a bar...

Any news on the horizon for 64GB and up MiniSD?

The problem is SDHC (MicroSD falls under this category) are limited to 32GB due to the file table / specification involved. All future cards are going to migrate to SDXC to get around the 32GB limitation, and SDXC cards will not work in devices that don't support the format. Sorry Killem. :(

    HighPoint RocketRAID 2310

Are you sure that is a Gigabit network? And that all computers involved have Gigabit ports? I ask because 12.5MB/s is the exact limit for 100Megabit LAN ports. ;)

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000

It is probably best to just replace it, although if you can find an identical or similar receiver for next to nothing then ya could probably get away with that too.

    All ASUS Xonar Users

Sorry for the late reply on this! ASUS Rampage II Extreme BIOS 1802. The card was an Xonar DX. There is the slight chance the PSU had something to do with this given I've determined it was the root of the instability issues I couldn't seem to fix. Now that you got me thinking about it I...

    Which One?

Ouch man, that's a bad case! Thermaltake has some interesting twists on designs, but I won't buy anything with their name on it. Cheap cases are usually cheap for a reason, but I would've expected better from that one even so. I'll admit it does look like the memory slots are placed rather...

    ghost image hard drive help...

Howdy Cobra. Ghost doesn't require an installation on the drive to be present When you copy an entire image onto a drive it overwrites whatever is there, so the necessary programs would have to be built into the bootable DVD itself. So you should not have any issue using a new hard drive...

Where Are All the GeForce GTX 480's?

It's not going to be hard to predict that the GPU market is swinging quickly back around to ATI's favor once again. It's always been cyclical, but ATI has all their cards lined up and NVIDIA's mis-step with the G100 / Fermi leaves them playing catchup for a year or three. ATI already has the...

Bad McAfee Update Affects Windows XP

Well, that's a major black eye for McAffee... I used to use them over Norton given Norton conflicted with everything, and that their software was so pervasive that it modified or affected just about every aspect of the system making it feel like a virus. That said I've had issues with every...
