Hard Drive Encryption to Soon Become the Norm

From our front-page news: Earlier this week, the biggest disk drive makers in the world completed a specification that paves the way for full-disk encryption in most, and in the future, probably all drives. Select manufacturers, such as Seagate, have been offering encrypted drives for a little...

Putting Four Intel X25-E Together in RAID 0

Your concerns are valid, that's for sure. At least in synthetic benchmarks, you'd expect to see close to 4x gains, but it's as though there's another bottleneck. Could it be the S-ATA bus? Heck, could it even be the processor? At that point, maybe the processor becomes a small bottleneck. Their...

Western Digital Launches World's First 2TB Hard Drives

Yes, the bricking drives issue... although the Freeagent issue is truly ridiculous as well. I don't think it's related, but my friend (whom I built a PC for three months ago) just had his 1TB 7200.11 drive die. Couldn't apply the firmware, because the drive wasn't even detectable by the BIOS.

Can ACard's DDR2 RAM Disk Beat an SSD?

I agree. After seeing what kind of performance non-Intel drives can pull, like OCZ's latest Apex, I can't wait to see what the situation is like around the Window 7 launch. By then, the drives should be even more affordable, and you're going to be getting a lot more for your money, than if you...

    NVIDIA's CEO Talks Netbooks

From our front-page news: With there being so much talk about Netbooks everywhere, care to know what NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang thinks about them, and also about his main competition? Laptop Mag sat down with him to see what was happening with ION in netbooks, and even Tegra (a technology we...

    Could Netbooks Curb PC Innovation?

Alright. Once again, you've stopped me in my tracks. That sounds absolutely fantastic. It still doesn't take away from that fact that people might think the notebook is capable of so much more, but I guess that's where research needs to come into play. That's why I'm wondering if there's...

Zune Survives 2008, Might See 2010

From our front-page news: After watching their Q4 revenue drop a staggering $100 Million compared to the same quarter last year, Microsoft's Zune team had to have an uneasy feeling when the announcement of layoffs came last week. While the Entertainment and Devices Division remained quite...

    Zotac GeForce GTX 285 & GTX 295

I agree. I wouldn't be too concerned with going from 1440x900 to 1680x1050. I'd just hold out and wait for a 24" to arrive and then consider it. I'm surprised it jumps from 22" to 28" though, with nothing in between... that makes things awful difficult.

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

Oh wow, that's a great idea! Can't believe I didn't even consider that in the past. Great tip! Grats on the second build, as well. Good luck hiding out in your own house ;-)

    Zotac GeForce GTX 285 & GTX 295

Doomsday, if you pick up the GTX 295, you'd really just be tossing money out the window. As I mentioned on the final page, that card is designed for those who own 30" monitors, and even 24" monitor users aren't going to get their full money's worth... so certainly, the power of that card won't...

    Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200

To save the most dough, I'd just go with the P5QL. It seems like a pretty solid board, and offers all of what you'd need. I'm not sure I'd expect the best overclocks out of it, but I'm sure 3.0GHz wouldn't be a problem at all. But given the price of the components to begin with, you're going to...

KDE on Windows is Really Shaping Up

From our front-page news: When it comes to a Windows desktop, you pretty much know what to expect. The basic Explorer shell has been around as long as Windows, and since Windows 95, it really hasn't changed too drastically. On the Linux side, though, it's typical to see various desktop...

Windows 7 to Bundle Popular Video Codecs

Fair enough. Once again, I didn't read too close into things and wound up overlooking most of the important details. I blame my lack of time, you can blame it on whatever you want to blame it on ;-) Really getting excited for W7 though... even without having tried it. Even non-techy people are...

Voltage Overclocking the GPU (GT200 & some 4000 cards)

Haha, that's fantastic. I ran a quick 3D game earlier on this PC, and the 8800 GT shot up to 95°C, and right now (idle), it's hovering around 80°C. I really gotta haul that card out later and replace it. I still don't think I'd get anywhere near 30°C though, so you must have some pretty nice...

Netbooks to Sell 35 Million Units in 2009?

I'm of the same mindset for the most part. I'm able to hold off for a little while, and I'm pleased with that, because I know things are just going to continue getting better and better. Once I finally realize I need one, there should be some great-looking models out.

    Could Netbooks Curb PC Innovation?

Single-core chips are still in notebooks? That's ridiculous... I had no idea. As for the SpeedStep issue, that's extremely interesting, and I wish I clued into that fact sooner. It's too bad... people would be getting a cheap notebook, but horrible battery-life. I'll note that I've never, ever...

Can ACard's DDR2 RAM Disk Beat an SSD?

Thanks, good read. I think the implementation is beyond stupid, though. You should be able to view the properties of a folder and get a real disk usage report, plain and simple. Saw that about the Intel SSDs as well... it's great. The X25-E's also saw a similar drop.

Digital Transition Could be Pushed Back Until June 12

From our front-page news: Alright. Is there a single person out there who didn't realize that a "digital transition" was coming? You didn't have to be a tech-head to know what changes were on the horizon, thanks to the incredible amount of publicity on all of the popular US channels. So, color...

Western Digital Launches World's First 2TB Hard Drives

From our front-page news: Western Digital today announced what we new was inevitable, a 2TB hard drive, built using four 500 GB platters, which produce an areal density of 400 GB/in2. The launch model is part of WD's Caviar Green series, meaning that it's designed for low noise, low power...
