Putting Four Intel X25-E Together in RAID 0

From our front-page news: Late last week, we linked to Tech Report's article on ACard's DDR2-based storage drive, which for the most part, was quite impressive. It was lacking the overall density we'd like to see, but it was fast, even keeping up in many tests to Intel's X25-E. Speaking of...

    Zotac GeForce GTX 285 & GTX 295

When NVIDIA released their GTX 285 and 295 earlier this month, they successfully reclaimed the performance crown for both single and dual-GPU graphics cards. We're finally putting both of these models through our gruelling testing, in both single card and SLI configurations, to see just how much...

Done! You need to log in with that name now, rather than the e-mail address :-)

Can ACard's DDR2 RAM Disk Beat an SSD?

So... we get this feature at a time when storage is ultra-cheap... nice. Seems ironic... we could have used that feature long ago! Hmm... how would things "seem" larger, then? The Windows search tool shouldn't count the file twice, then, really. How Linux handles things is that links to files...

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

So IBT uses all eight cores without an issue on Skulltrail? That's great to hear, because currently, it won't use all eight threads on a Core i7 processor. It's frustrating, heh. I agree, though. IBT for the win: http://forums.techgage.com/showthread.php?t=4376

    Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200

PopcornMachine: I wouldn't stress over 60°C at all... the TJ Max is 100°C, and you are far from that. Pepper_Roni(ill reg later: To be honest, I think you'd be just fine with a stock fan. What might bother you is the fan noise, but I'd be highly doubtful to see the temperatures rising too...

ATI's Graphics Card Drivers Need Serious Love

That isn't the issue here. Even just earlier, I loaded the game up with the HD 4850 X2, at 1680x1050, and like before, it was running at 2 FPS. Turn off Catalyst AI... boom, works fine. It's frustrating, and what's bad is that a regular consumer likely isn't going to know how to fix the issue...

Netbooks to Sell 35 Million Units in 2009?

I'm with you there... the lack of an ODD is a huge drawback for me. To install Linux on the netbook I used during CES, I had to create a bootable flash drive and then extract an ISO to it. It's far easier to just burn a drive image and install via DVD, without question. For me, a netbook would...

Is this a good price for this system?

First and foremost, welcome to the forums. Did you mean for your full e-mail address as your username, though? I don't recommend that at all... so please let me know if you would mind if I removed everything after the @... you'd then log in using your nickname. As for Skulltrail, I wouldn't...

Windows 7 to Bundle Popular Video Codecs

I regretted that as soon as I said it. Most of it does appear to be tuning, though, nothing truly new (aside from the GUI, of course). Today, they even announced improvements for their defragger, and even without reading the article, all I can say is, "Finally!". That's been one of the weakest...

ATI's Graphics Card Drivers Need Serious Love

I left out a fair amount of information due to the fact that this "simple" news post quickly became eight paragraphs, but I will add that I've been having issues with ATI drivers for quite a while, but most notably in the past year. The real issues began when I began testing ATI's HD 3870 X2...

Netbooks to Sell 35 Million Units in 2009?

From our front-page news: Towards the end of last month, we reported on an industry story that stated that notebooks, for the first time ever, outsold desktop PCs. This occurrence took place during Q3, so chances are good the variances between the two are even more defined for Q4. What's to...

    Could Netbooks Curb PC Innovation?

Oh, I agree, but I believe the differences today are even more stark. All notebooks out there right now are Dual-Core, and while some of them might not be that fast, even the slowest would be twice the CPU of the fastest single-core Atom (no Dual-Core's in netbooks, yet). So two notebooks might...

Voltage Overclocking the GPU (GT200 & some 4000 cards)

Thanks for the clock reports... very interesting. With regards to the core voltage keeping under 60°C, do you mean at idle, or load? It sounds good, regardless. I'll be replacing the junk 8800 GT I have in this machine soon with some card lying around here... I can't handle the 75°C idle temps...

Can ACard's DDR2 RAM Disk Beat an SSD?

The issue with me is still the size of storage we're being given. Even with 8GB modules, that would give us 64GB of space, and as I've mentioned before, I find Intel's 80GB SSD to be far too small. I'm able to install Windows, some benchmarks, two games, and before I know it, I'm out of space...

    Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 2GB

Low resolutions are useless for dual-GPU cards... there will just be no differences in performance, even with AA, as far as I'm concerned. High AA seems to depend more on memory, not raw GPU power, so at low resolutions, fast dual-GPU cards can compare to mid-range single-GPU cards, depending on...

Windows 7 to Bundle Popular Video Codecs

It's not ground-breaking at all, but no one expected it to be. Rather, it's a fresh coat of paint that Vista should have had. The truth is, Vista retained what people expected from Windows, and it's easy to understand their logic. But, they should have tried something new earlier, because after...

Voltage Overclocking the GPU (GT200 & some 4000 cards)

I'm curious... was it not possible to get anywhere close to 677/1458 without the voltage boost? Do you have a comparable overclock without any need for increased voltage? The entire idea fascinates me anyway, and I'm really glad to see that this is possible via software rather than hard-modding...

Can ACard's DDR2 RAM Disk Beat an SSD?

You point out a few major issues here Kougar. Those RAM modules would add a fair amount of heat to that general area, and the power consumption sure wouldn't help either. Add a few hundred dollars and you essentially double the space, and reclaim a lot of space in your chassis/rackmount. I can't...

ATI's Graphics Card Drivers Need Serious Love

From our front-page news: If there's one thing I realize well, it's that from time to time, people can run into a string of bad luck. The past few weeks have proved that fact to me, where computers are concerned at least, and I'm sure I'll divulge more into that at some point. As I mentioned...
