Intel Core i7 - Choosing the Best Memory Kit

I tend to agree, unless the CPU processing is extremely light (And from what I know of fluid dynamic simulations, protein simulations, etc) it just isn't. The CPU is still the processing bottleneck, and beyond a certain point faster memory isn't going to help appreciably as much as a faster...

    The new build ...

Very impressive results Psi! I agree working with the memory settings is a bit frustration, other than the main settings and back-2-back CAS delay I don't tighten anything else and leave them on auto. Outside of synthetic memory testing it's just not going to show results... and it's very...

Windows 7 ... what do you like, or not & why ... or do you care?

This GodMode thing was an intentional tool put in by Windows 7's developers. There are in fact quite a few more versions of it too, a la: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10426627-56.html?tag=mncol It's not maliscious by itself, but the functionality could allow someone with malicious...

CES 2010: AMD's Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series GPUs

From what I hear the mobile 5870 is equivalent to a desktop 4870.... but it's still a nice ~20% boost above NVIDIA's best mobile chip. I think a few form of cooling technology will have to finally reach mainstream (like silicon chips with watercooling channels in them as IBM had developed) or...

    EVGA's W555 Dual-Socket Motherboard Redefines High-End

    I already do. :D

    Do you buy ...

They've been selling them for $199 for the better part of a year until they switched to $230 awhile ago. The caveat is you must physically buy it in the store, so while you are there you're likely to buy other components for your system build there. ;) As for how they undersell Newegg, I...

Intel's Initial Larrabee Discrete Graphics Card Canceled

Some sites have indicated they think Intel might try incorporating bits of Larrabee into future versions of Clarkdale/Arrandale in order to finally replace the old IGP they've been carting around for the last decade. I'm starting to think they might be right, given modern GPU's all but require...

Windows 7 ... what do you like, or not & why ... or do you care?

This is actually an extremely good point here that I completely overlooked. This "Godmode" hack would bypass lower-level access restrictions to a certain extent. I am not sure it would completely bypass a lockdown though... the OS disables the actual control panels this "Godmode" folder hack...

Microsoft Releases Open-Sourced Windows 7 USB Install Tool

Nah, installing from the USB 2.0 drive is the best route to go. As long as you had the disc already (or bought the online Student promotion which gives the ISO files) it's great. It will install more quickly than using the DVD drive.

    EVGA's W555 Dual-Socket Motherboard Redefines High-End

I definitely would enjoy using one of these as a foundation for one hell of a folding super computer. It's not common to have the ability to overclock dual-socket boards, but I'm certain this board should allow for some serious overclocks. The sheer board real-estate to play with should have...

Wooden PC Case in the making - Got Questions.

Well, let me illustrate my point. My motherboard is listed in my signature, it has just about all the electrical "bells & whistles" including all solid caps. Measuring just about anywhere I read 0.035v on the tray and mounting screws. The back port cluster varies the most but one of the aluminum...

Windows 7 ... what do you like, or not & why ... or do you care?

I'd have to say that I like how flexible the OS is. For example Windows 7 is the first Windows OS designed to handle multiple GPU driver installations, such as in the case of IGP+discrete GPU laptops. On the flipside, I dislike how many minor cosmetic issues still exist (many existed even in...

    Laptop and 5.1 Speaker Compatability

I have to agree. I hate to say it considering you already bought those speakers Alucid, but two stereo speakers that use a single jack would probably have been the best route here. 5.1 on a laptop is just going to require a larger investment in an external soundcard or some sort of elaborate...

How much RAM will be in your next PC?

I've begun folding -bigadv work units, and boy my opinion has changed. Just a single bigadv work unit will balloon into 5GB of RAM.... given than I fold inside a VM, I need about 1GB of RAM for the host OS so suddenly I'm using all 6GB of RAM! Hypothetically if I upgraded to Gulftown...

    CES 2010

I've seen a huge list of Xeon-branded Gulftown models... but only one Core i7/Core i9 Gulftown model. I'd really love to know if Intel will be nice and offer us poor folk any Gulftowns cheaper than the $999 980XE ;) Or if that will only happen in 8 months from now as I would bet will be the...

Clearing Up Misconceptions about CUDA and Larrabee

Tesla uses the GT200 core.... Fermi will give a significant performance boost because it was the first GPU core completely designed and optimized for CUDA. So again you wouldn't want to go buying any Tesla equipment until after Fermi, aka GT300, finally launches. ;)

    Laptop and 5.1 Speaker Compatability

Your laptop has one line-in and one line-out port... unless your laptop hardware is capable of using the line-in as a line-out you will not be able to use it. The sound hardware will also need to let you configure it as a sub or side/rear speaker out, otherwise you would just be sending two...

    Laptop and 5.1 Speaker Compatability

Welcome to the forums Alucid! I am not the most familiar with sound technology, but I don't see how that USB dongle would work as it only offers one audio-out jack. Most software that claims to give 7.1 sound is just a gimmick. You should be able to just use the single jack you have and plug...

Clearing Up Misconceptions about CUDA and Larrabee

That's pretty much true. ATI's OpenCL, Brook, and other initiatives aren't as widely received as CUDA has been. I'm not sure how DX11's DirectCompute requirements will play into this either. The issue is NVIDIA can't win if they don't have their latest-greated GPU out the door. GT300, G100...

Wooden PC Case in the making - Got Questions.

Howdy Killem! Welcome to the forums, or at least the registered part of them. :D Wooden cases are very cool and I've seen quite a few nice ones, and still more that were just impressive! It even makes me a touch envious because you get to custom build your case around the type of computer you...
