Clearing Up Misconceptions about CUDA and Larrabee

All I will say is that NVIDIA hasn't won anything yet... their new GPU is launching more than a quarter late, and we have yet to see it deliver on performance. The longer they take the larger the advantage ATI will have. Additionally ATI/AMD is already launching mobile 5000 series GPUs...

VirtualBox 3.1 Released, Introduces "Teleportation" and Improves Snapshots

Since I (finally) had a good moment to install the official RTM version of Windows 7, the second thing I did was install Virtualbox and its tools. For those that may not know I run Ubuntu 9.10 64bit as a guest OS inside Windows 7 64bit for Folding@home purposes. After all what good is having a...

    Home Theater Reciever died...

I'm in the market for a receiver myself, will be my first so I'm taking a crash course in learning about this stuff. Loads of fun! At any rate it seems like a decent receiver, has the sound decoding options, 7.1 channel, plenty of HDMI ports, fair price... As for what could be going on, what...

DFI Rumored to Cease its Consumer Motherboard Production

Hm, well I apologize if I misunderstood anything. But I do have to chime in to counterpoint on a few things, because I think the topic does pertain to people other than the average Joe. And as before I agree on all counts with ya here. Which is why we got into a discussion about extreme...

    Merry Christmas

Christmas is whatever you want to make of it. Not a Christian? Then it can be a holiday about being thankful for friends and family, renewing those relationships and staying in touch with them. On a grander scheme it unites strangers and generally is a good reason to remember to stop and...

DFI Rumored to Cease its Consumer Motherboard Production

Hmm, I would have to respectfully disagree on a few points. Overclocking is more commonplace than ever, today even budget models tout their overclocking abilities. I agree the extreme overclocking enthusiasts likely remains within that 1-2% but I don't believe it has decreased at all. Forums...

Reading or Watching the News... Which is Better?

Reading, definitely for a few reasons... The largest one by far, is that listening to the talking heads they know how to choose synonyms carefully to make the story sound more shocking, unbelievable, atrocious, appalling, heinous, or IMPLY any other extreme emotion. Repeatedly I could listen...

VirtualBox 3.1 Released, Introduces "Teleportation" and Improves Snapshots

Thanks for the tip! When I dived into VMware they said up front that VMware tools would be needed in order to modify the guest OS resolutions, but I saw no mention of it with VirtualBox during the install process. VB is definitely not as user friendly if jumping in headfirst without any prior...

    OMG Batman!!!!!

If the core isn't powered down, then yeah that might have something to do with it... ;) Windows would see a fully powered, waiting, idle core and dump work onto it. I'm not going to say Windows 7's multithreading capability is perfect, I've seen it bounce a single thread across four active...

Microsoft Told to Stop Selling Office Before January 11

After reading Engadget's article, I'm going to agree with them that this isn't a money issue. Keep in mind if it was they could have had Microsoft fined a pretty penny for all the past sold products with their XML code in it, but I've only seen them mention the injunction to halt future sales...

    Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200

At risk of contradicting Rob, I have to chime in on this one... The last BIOS update predated C2D's, and the board is old enough the VRM's are likely the older versions Intel stated couldn't be validated for C2D's. The E5200 has a slow 800FSB bus speed so it stands a good chance of working in...

DFI Rumored to Cease its Consumer Motherboard Production

The Tech Report reported on an email they got back from DFI which refutes the rumor... frankly I would be surprised if they did vanish. They have far more product in the channel and better support than Abit did during their demise, and the signs were there that Abit wasn't going to be around for...

    The new build ...

I admit I used to recommend Water Wetter myself, there are some really passionate watercooling users out there that swear by it. The science behind the reasoning makes sense as well... but in hindsight don't think a waterblock is just that sensitive for it to matter. It's the block design...

    OMG Batman!!!!!

Glad to see you're enjoying your new system! It never gets old hearing how some people are amazed at the performance jump... :D It doesn't distribute the load itself evenly, that would hurt performance. What Windows 7 does is avoid shuffling active threads onto sleeping cores when it can...

VirtualBox 3.1 Released, Introduces "Teleportation" and Improves Snapshots

Gave this a try while waiting for a Sysmark run to finish... they weren't kidding when they said it wasn't exactly user friendly (try making a VM from a disk image, oi), but once the user knows how the program works it's not half bad. It's just that first step that will cause issues, but once...

31% of Windows 7 Issues Related to Installation?

This seems to be the second largest problem I read about with Windows 7... most of those users aren't using NVIDIA chipsets either, most are just OEM boxes. I know one friend that runs WIndows 7 on his Macbook Pro through bootcamp, and he has this exact issue.

    The new build ...

God, that reservoir makes me shudder and that dust makes me want to wheeze! :p I used to use Water Wetter, but I don't anymore as I can't seem to notice any improvement in temps beyond normal fluctuations. It also reacts with a large number of color additives and other things you would add to...
