ASUS' Xonar STX Gains Even More Functionality Under Linux

Funny ya should mention those cards.... they aren't as rosey in my mind as they used to be. Don't get me wrong, the sound quality is excellent for me... but the microphone support completely sucks. I have always had issues being heard over my mic with the Xonar sound card. I have maxed out...

Microsoft Demos Augmented-Reality Maps at TED

I wouldn't care about being videotaped in public places if it actually meant higher security and less crime... but it just doesn't. Common sense would tell you people would stop walking into convenience stores and robbing them without disguising themselves and their vehicle, but people...

    A Look at ATI's Catalyst 10.2 & 10.3 Drivers

Most people with dual monitors configure the center monitor to be the only one playing movies. Some games are designed for multi-monitor support (like Supreme Commander) and instead of stretching the main screen, they instead use the second monitor as a view window to monitor areas of the...

Kingston Releases 256GB DataTraveler 310 Flash Drive

Rob, that's insane! 16GB is just a fraction more space than Windows 7 64bit takes!

    Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB

For those owners of 40GB Kingston SSDNow V drives, there is a possible workaround for the lack of TRIM support. Please keep in mind this will likely void whatever warranty the drive might have (keep a backup of the old firmware just in case!), and as with any sort of firmware flashing comes with...

    Legal DVD's vs. Pirated DVD's

Haha, I saw this just a few days ago! It's sooo true, I'd love to see a media industry CEO be presented with it to get their response. ;) What's even more hilarious (or frustrating) is that according to my old law professor the FBI warning screen that has been plastered on VHS tapes and DVDs...

    Intel i3 530 Vs. AMD Phenom II X2 555

Intel has the stronger architecture so I think it's a very close call on performance... if you plan to overclock then the Intel chip would be an easy call. Basically the AMD chip will always need to overclock higher than the Intel to stay performance competitive. Even if the cores functioned...

Kingston Releases 256GB DataTraveler 310 Flash Drive

Guys, quit knocking the price! When I see articles like this it just means in a few years it will be $30 at the local Best Buy. :D Wasn't it in 2001 that a 256MB CF card was $130? A 1GB Microdrive was $360 and had just been developed by IBM... Tech has to be developed before prices can begin...

    Is this motherboard shot?

Ahh, thanks for clearing that up Killem. :D Pretty safe bet it was his board then!

    RAM Question

Download http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and look at the Memory tab to see the details about your RAM. Take the "DRAM Frequency" and then double it to see what speed your RAM is at. As Tharic said you can only use 2GB modules... 4GB modules exist but cost far to much for desktop users right now.

Windows 7 Receiving Revamped Activation Software

I have reactivated Vista a significant number of times without having to call Microsoft about it, and ironically both Vista and Windows 7 are identical Ultimate (Upgrade) versions. I first activated Windows 7 at the end of December, so it's only been two months if that long... The next time I am...

    Fan question

Crow is right, regardless of the yellow wire the fan speed is ditctated by the voltage fed to it. You should go into your BIOS and disable the fan control for the ports in question. The majority of auxiliary ports run at the full 12V all the time and do not control the fan speed whatsoever, so...

    Win7 task scheduler....

Yeah, the process is not designed to create the folder. It expects the target location to already exist. I ran into that design flaw myself during the RC build, but it gave me other problems than what you experienced... and I completely agree, it is a design flaw.

Windows 7 Receiving Revamped Activation Software

Yes, for all of the points they claim to examine that don't change, it seems the simplest changes set off the re-activation program. I'm about ready to call bullshit on some of these Microsoft blogs that explained how the process work, because it clearly isn't functioning as described...

    Is this motherboard shot?

I hate to say it but if your board booted with his PSU and RAM, then it probably wasn't your board. When you say you tried your PSU, do you mean a new PSU or your PSU in his computer? I'm trying to follow but it gets confusing rather fast. Hope that replacement board works for you Killem. As...

Need heatsink recommendation for DX58SO + Tall RAM

You should be able to find a heatsink that is tall enough to sit above the RAM, either a tall tower or a top-down facing heatsink. Some of Zalman's CNPS blocks are fairly small, if the 9500 still blocks the third RAM slot then your options are definitely highly limited. Something like the...

    Win7 task scheduler....

Probably, but I don't disable most stuff anymore. I use the search options regularly and after the initial period where it rescans everything it works fine for me. With XP disabling and removing processes was enough to break parts of the OS or make it unreliable, and the only thing Windows 7 has...

Alan Wake will no longer be coming to the PC

The sense is that they don't want to devote any resources away from the console development. Based on earlier comments by the Alan Wake team they don't want to contend with piracy, and will make far more from their console games then they would for a PC release. For awhile they said they would...

The Path to Success: AMD's RV870

I'm sure it will be faster. The question is will it be affordable! I am rather intrigued that Anand thinks "The Northern Islands" GPU family will be launching this year... Not only is it rather early for a new launch, but at 32 or 28nm it will only give ATI a further advantage in their...

Windows 7 Receiving Revamped Activation Software

There are more than two sides to this, so I'm going to cover both. This update is not to simply stop or deter people from using illegal copies of Windows. The main target (in my opinion) is to target counterfeiters that sell PC's will illegal copies of Windows 7 installed. When the buyer...
