Well don't forget AMD jumped from Socket A to Socket 754. Then they wanted dual-channel memory, so along came socket 939. There was briefly some odd problem and they released Athlon(s) for their 940 Opteron socket too, but that passed quickly. Athlon64 FX-51 was a 940 chip, I don't remember...

    Missouri Floods.

Good thing you are already an expert with watercooling, pumps, hoses, and fluid dynamics I guess... ;) What a mess that storm front has been, really annoying that we really need the rain here and we only got a brief 30 minute shower from that front, most of it hit the northern half of Texas...

Gigabyte to develop high-end gaming accessories...

ASUS already makes and sells a very large number of cases, CPU coolers, networking equipment, and a little bit of everything. So I don't see how adding keyboards, mice, and headsets to the mix is anything major really. :) More than a few Gigabyte/ASUS things were pretty bad but it hasn't...

Building your own external HD still means you must buy enclosures... best encolsure I've seen is the Antec MX-1, but any good encoslure would almost double the cost of 320gb drive. I'm way to cheap to do that... :D Besides the 4 disk RAID I was meaning that I'd bought a few more. Once I...

Gigabyte to develop high-end gaming accessories...

Abit tried this and it led to their downfall, if Universal hadn't bought them out at the last minute. I agree Gigabyte and ASUS are the two biggest companies though so they probably have the muscle and definitely have the resources to attempt it. Whether they could make something to interest me...

    Are SSDs Causing Notebook Defects?

There seems to be some question regarding how Avian got these numbers... more than likely with only a few samples and a good bit of statistics. If there are actually any failure problems I am sure they would come to light pretty quickly, because lots and lots of companies use those same...

Not any more than it always has been... prices go down, but "they" find new things to sell us so we end up paying roughly the same. Had I upgraded anything on my P4 Northwood it would of been just as bad... socket 478 to LGA 775, DDR to DDR2, AGP to PCIe.... I skipped all of those by keeping...

Intel X48 Motherboards to Show Up This Week

Well, it would help if DDR3 showed some appreciabe gains in everyday applications, instead of narrow situations or specfic benchmarks. DDR2 had an easier time of doing that once it began reaching 800Mhz with around CAS 4 latencies... DDR3 even at 2GHz just doesn't do much. I am rather curious...

Fair enough. :) I would fall under that category, as I've strung 4 320GB drives together for a RAID 10. My experiences with RAID have been very good, so I bought a few extra since at $59 shipped for a Seagate 320gb the price was the lowest I'd seen to date. They perform well by themselves...

NVIDIA 9800GTX and GX2 Get Greenlight

Looks like y'all were right after all... apparently the drivers used were a major issue. All in all the card looks more respectable in the launch reviews than in that TT pre-launch review. I still say anyone that spends $650 on a GX2 is going to want to maim something when the true next-gen...

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz - Wolfdale Arrives

Rob, I guess this is one of those 500FSB situations you hinted at elsewhere... I am simply curious, did you lower the CPU multiplier to see if the FSB would budge higher? What was the RAM running at at that 470FSB overclock? Ohh man I couldn't agree more. It took me roughly 45 mintues to get...

Intel X48 Motherboards to Show Up This Week

It's kinda ironic... memory prices for a 2GB DDR2-800 kit at the start of 2007 are the same as some good 2GB DDR3-1600 kits right now. The irony is that at the time $200 was considered a good price for 2GB DDR2 last year. ;)

Or us users can just open up more programs to compensate for the lack of multi-threaded apps... :D I am not to sure about CUDA, outside of HPC situations. Not even Stanford's Folding@home program wanted to use CUDA to program a NVIDIA port to F@H, because it was proprietary in nature. CUDA...

Where In Quad's Name Are They?

I am still wondering if that little problem Intel divulged about long-term reliability issues they discovered with Yorkfields in testing may somehow be connected to this. They have been selling QX9650 Yorkfields since October... more than enough time to of caught up with demand. This isn't...

    Cooler Master Cosmos S

I see I shouldn't of even mentioned the power supply... ;) I would not either these days... but a great number of enthusiasts base their decisions regarding cases due to the power supply since it makes a case a good value for them. I just mentioned it as an afterthought. Even my first case...

    Cooler Master Cosmos S

I'd quite agree on all points made, except #3. Case in point (pun intended), how many "normal" users spend $250+shipping on a computer case... ;) It does not even have a power supply. Considering the high-end enthusiast is the target market, more than four drives should not be unexpected...

Dell 19" UltraSharp 1907FP LCD Monitor

I had heard something about Samsung planning a USB only monitor... wasn't sure how one changes a DVI or VGA port to USB on your graphics card though, and I don't think most monitors are designed to accept inputs from USB. Was this one designed for that? Most monitors with USB such as mine simply...

    Advice requested.......

I don't mean testing it with a program, I had meant actually looking at the specific SMART values from the drive, sorry. From my experience all the drive diagnostic tools are pretty much either "works" or "doesn't work" since if they claim otherwise then they must give an RMA regardless...

NVIDIA 9800GTX and GX2 Get Greenlight

When most of the pages are nothing but graphs, doesn't seem that lengthy, at least from my point of view. They tested everything in XP and also Vista, and then a few high AA modes. Only thing missing was a pair of G92's in SLI to compare against the GX2.

Intel X48 Motherboards to Show Up This Week

Rob, your statement truly does puzzle me... May I ask what boards have you attempted specifically? Are you sure your processor sample is capable of running 500FSB, or have you tried multiple processors? I've taken a E6300 to ~515FSB on a GA-965P-DS3 Rev 1 (Rev 1s had serious vReg issues), and...
