Data Recovered from Shuttle Columbia Hard Drive

On one side of it, glad they got the rest of the data back from it. On the other side... for every pound of weight, it takes 10 pounds of fuel to get it into space. I think a thumb drive could have easily replaced a 384mb hard drive for whatever DOS program they were using, let alone all the...

Merlin is correct, between the two only the Antec Solo offers Micro-ATX form factor support.

Windows XP's SP3 Makes Reverting to IE6 Impossible

Some of the GUI is definitely not intuitive, and furthermore the control panel settings are absurd and make little sense. But everything is customizable to the extreme, and as with any food that is an acquired taste, it gets better quickly after the initial aggravations. I can't stomach going...

Student? Get 91% Off Microsoft Office Ultimate

Well, that is kind of true of any Office product. Pasting things into Word is easy... but pasting things FROM Word is begging for trouble and typially gives extremely messy code. I wouldn't expect anything better for Frontpage, and you are right it makes some messy code. But it was extremely...

    16-year-old survives 25,000V blast

I've seen a Modern Marvels show on how they service overhead powerlines... the bigger ones they use a chopper to reach, and they specifically must trigger a discharge to ground the chopper to the cable before the guy can start working on them. A foot or even two feet depending on weather was the...

NVIDIA's Huang Discusses His Distaste for Intel

What is sort of funny... AMD released K8, then decided to use the same design for the next 5 years while they focused on building/improving fabs, and basically made only minor changes to their K8 design. If NVIDIA indeed does release 9900GTX as a 40/55nm G92b derivative, it'll be two years with...

AMD Updates CPU Launch Schedule - Phenom 9850 Due In a Few Weeks

Hah, I'd rather throw together two or three Quad systems for the same price... :) The Skulltrail board and FB-DIMMs are simply expensive and I don't feel Skulltrail was ever tuned as well as most enthusiast motherboards. It's to bad Nehalem-EX (Becktown) will use FB-DIMMs and a custom LGA1567...

Frontpage was extremely easy to use and learn when you had almost no understanding of html. I could make some decent ebay pages pretty quickly, then just paste the raw code in and be done with it. Publisher isn't nearly as easy to use. No way in hell I'm paying $400 for Dreamweaver, although I...

Windows XP's SP3 Makes Reverting to IE6 Impossible

The last time I reverted IE7 to IE6, IE6 would randomly crash one out of four times whenever I opened a window. Got so aggravating I just reinstalled IE7. Is a big reason I use Opera, but there are some things I just need IE for.

    Grr, motherboard benchmarks!

Ah, but a purely FSB only overclock tells nothing about how the board will overclock on a full CPU multiplier. When Quads first were around most boards seemed to have serious issues with the Q6600's 9 multiplier, and most users had to lower it just to overclock because the boards weren't tuned...

    Going Vista 64-Bit...

XP is better for a latop.... however if you prefer Vista then I WOULD suggest the 64bit version over the 32bit version. I've seen the tests where 3GBs is actually benificial for Vista, so I'd say 3GB is fine if you are running Vista. 2GB for XP. 4GB is okay, but you won't see any difference...

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - The New Budget Superstar?

Intel's stock cooler will come with paste pre applied. If you ever reinstall the cooler however, you will need more. Intel's CPU coolers are getting smaller and smaller, so I am not as sure 3GHz will be a safe idea on them... just keep an eye on your core temps. The E7200 cooler should be...

    Grr, motherboard benchmarks!

Getting anything over 425FSB on a Quadcore that is perfectly stable on the full multiplier is extremely rare... even with 45nm Quads 500FSB is NOT something that is common, infact I'd call it a fluke chance if someone was able to do so without using the lowest multipliers... or maybe even WITH...

AMD Updates CPU Launch Schedule - Phenom 9850 Due In a Few Weeks

Always three sides to a coin! I try to find them... :) Silly or not, still would love to have a 12-core computer. I already shut down my old pre-Pentium 4 era Folding@Home boxes due to a very bad power/performance ratio... would love to condense my current systems into just ~3, and retire...

M-rated Videogame Sales to Minors on a Steep Decline

Not to sure, kids are rather resourceful. I know easily that parents left checkbooks around, and weren't always checking their accounts because life had gotten hectic, or they outright gave me the info to use (in very rare cases ;) ). Using a check number online directly off a check would be...

Is Valve Porting Source to Linux?

Some linux site used Linux Mint and Wine-Doors... they installed Half Life 2 and it started up just like normal, although it did have a performance hit. Of course, Vavle games will run on even the most lousy 64bit discreet GPUs, so it's just a nitpick issue. With PC games on the decline, and...

*whistles* I gotta say, ya hadn't heard of this one? MS launched it last fall sometime, it was due to end April 31st but MS extended it. Frontpage got moved into Publisher, and Visio got removed completely and must be bought on its own, not even "Ultimate" offers Visio... and that was a very...

NVIDIA to Simplify Their Product Lineup to Help Appeal to Wider Audience

Well, I want to be impartial so my point doesn't get ignored, so to be fair I should point out that the memory sizing issue is more a problem because of the card manufacturers that use custom card designs. NVIDIA never made an official GPU beyond 640/768 RAM (that I recall!), but groups like...

    16-year-old survives 25,000V blast
