Windows 7 to be Released in October?

I am definitely waiting with baited breath as it were. Have y'all read this entry yet? http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/04/25/engineering-windows-7-for-graphics-performance.aspx That's just one of many changes that should've been done in Vista but never actually were, but are now being...

HTPC ... to the next level.

Heh, my TWC DVR box randomly decides not to record shows, so I'd consider that a toss up! I've had to unplug the DVR twice so far to hard reset it... there is even a sticker on the back of the unit suggesting customers do exactly that if it locks up. It's a Scientific Atlantica piece of junk...

    OCZ Launches PCI-E-based SSD, "Z-Drive"

Yes, some of them are. It requires a drive controller chip that can be detected upon boot and recognized... some first generation PCIe SSD's like the FusionIO didn't have the hardware to be bootable, but they've supposedly rectified that. I do know OCZ's PCIe RAID SSD cards are bootable.

HTPC ... to the next level.

Because piping your cable or SAT TV into your computer isn't fully allowed due to DRM issues. Granted you can do so with the purchase of a TV tuner equipped card, but for most programming you won't be able to watch everything especially any non standard channels. I don't remember all the...

    Common Reasons People Leave Linux

Excellent link Ben. Puts some of that much more nicely than I would've... I had taken some mild offense from that PCWord article as the author comes across pretty snobbish. He glosses over or outright dismisses some valid issues with "common users" in his points. #2: Yes, that's true of any...

    Should we consider RAM content?

I'd be curious to see what programs the memory manufacturers themselves would prefer to see used... I can't imagine them preferring anything non-synthetic? I hope they can offer some real application suggestions to go with those. :) Continuing on my line of logic, I'm just stating that it'd...

Why is North America Lagging in Internet Speed?

Well, got an email stating Time Warner was increasing their line rates. They weren't kidding... this used to be a 10/1 Mbps line. This makes TWC's proposed 60GB line cap on this line seem all the more ridiculous... it would take me less than 6 hours to burn through a 60GB monthly cap...

    GO OC 09 Coverage

Hey Rob. I've since found out what it was for, this was not the only Core i5 board to have it. Apparently it was designed to be part of Intel's next Turbo Memory solution. From what I am hearing the project has been axed, which sounds like a good thing. Some info on it in the third paragraph...

Seriously? That's just amusing... most sites say if you spend that much it's automatically free. Every $1.99 counts I guess... :D

    Gigabyte Open Overclocking Championship 2009

Heh, well I guess that's one way to get rid of old and outdated Core i7 965 "ES" samples, donate them to an OC competition! I do like how Gigabyte arranged the competition around a midrange board and midrange GPU, and not the absolute best they offer. Spoilsport. :p

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

I've seen some Core i7 965's reaching $800 just because the 975 is around the corner and happens to be a D0 stepping. Gotta love the progress of technology... when you're not one of those being run over by it. ;) As far as overclocking Skulltrail goes, only thing I can say is be sure to keep...

If the only thing you want is performance, then RAID a pair of the vertex drives. Just keep in mind if you use RAID your boots will include a 5-10 second delay waiting for Intel's RAID controller to scan the drives for RAID volumes and initialize them every reboot. A discrete card, even the...

What to do, what to do,what to do.....Comp Upgrade

If you are that curious NVIDIA was offering to let people test drive it for free, as Rob said. I'm sure they are still offering that promotion.

To costly to burn 100-200MB's of data to DVDs, not to mention I don't want the hassle of storing them. It's cheaper to just buy another drive. $35 for 200 DVDs or $65 for 750GB drive that's rewritable and takes up considerably less space? It's why I have a NAS with internal RAID now.

With RAID, if the HDD dies then you are protected (with the obvious exception of RAID 0). That wasn't what I was referring to... With ANY kind of overclock no matter how mild bad data was being written to the array. I tested it out on two different Gigabyte motherboards... I have no idea if that...

Go with what Ben suggested. I've heard some good things about TightVNC, but not actually tried it yet. From what I have read its a recommended program to use.

Two Raptors in RAID should provide better write speeds, but it won't help on the access latency which is what makes the SSD such a noticeable upgrade. And against a Vertex or X25-M, the read speeds are still going to favor the SSD as well. Personally I am done with RAID, especially Intel's...

What exactly is that black slot by the memory? That isn't actually a SODIMM slot is it?? LMAO, 16 phrases on the power system... That board must be their flagship Core i5 offering, going to be north of $200 too.

What to do, what to do,what to do.....Comp Upgrade

Core i7 uses a new socket, is why. The only chipset that powers the new socket is X58. You could buy a 24" Dell 2408WFP 1900x1200 monitor for less than the price of that bundle, just to give you an idea. Typical 22" monitors cost under $200... the 120hz refresh rate is double the norm for an...
