I sometimes run dual monitors. 1 - 17" Sony CRT, 1 - 19" Samsung LCD. Both at 1280x1024 (max res for each). Generally for playing games on the LCD while watching tv on the CRT. Otherwise I usually have one turned off. Also, this is done in Linux. :cool:

Are you planning on OCing the Opty in the end? That's half the advantage it has over the X2s - higher OC at lower temp.

So if you were going to build a new system this summer/fall, and you're coming from really old tech, would you just go to S939 knowing that it's going to be obsolete in the forseeable future, or would you jump in and go AM2? I would like to see more benchmarks with faster memory, but I don't...

I didn't want to add my personal biases to the initial post, I wanted to see what others thought. That being said, I have always been a fan of nvidia. I'm due for an upgrade this summer, and I'm just trying to do some initial research. I'm very into htpcs as well as computers in general...

Would you guys go for an Nvidia Nforce4 based chipset or an ATI Crossfire based chipset? I see there will be Nforce 5 and ATI RD580 coming out with the new AM2 boards, but I'm looking at current tech for my next upgrade. So what are the differences between chipsets? Features, stability, etc.

I don't know that it will necessarily affect many here, but the new chips are going to start implementing hardware level Digital Rights Management (DRM). Personally this concerns me because I use my current computer as a DVR/PVR/HTPC (call it what you want, it's all the same) as well as normal...

I think that's a fairly easy choice then. The retail version is $10 cheaper and has a 3 year warranty. The only stepping info I've seen is E6. Does it get more detailed than that, and is there a way to find out what a chip will be when purchasing?

Cool, thanks for the link. I haven't seen that site before. So can someone tell me the difference between the different Opteron 165 models I'm seeing? One is OSA165DAA6CD and the other is OSA165CDBOX. As far as I can tell they're the same except the OSA165CDBOX model is the retail version...

The only problem with that though is price (for both AMD and Intel)... I am guessing that the new boards and procs are going to come with a hefty pricetag. Hopefully that will drive down the price of current tech, but still... I want a great system, but I don't want to make myself broke doing...

So my next tough choice is, do I upgrade in a couple months with current technology once it's been proven, or do I wait a little longer and go for an AM2 based board... There's always something right around the corner I know, but this seems to be a rather major jump. As far as the RAM goes...

I agree it's a good idea to wait a little for the technology to prove itself (in this case the mobo). I probably won't actually be able to purchase this system until this summer sometime. So far I haven't seen any actual reviews of this board, just word of mouth from people that have used it...
