Top 10 Free Linux Games

Requiring a game to be 100% free is so dumb.

It has NOTHING to do with Linux being free

I wanted to provide a selection of games anyone can go and grab without leaving their chair. A commercial games list will come later, in addition to a part two to this one.

So you mention neverball but forget it's close cousin, neverputt?

Neverball is great, and I don't argue it's inclusion in the list, but of the 2 I have actually found myself playing neverputt more. Both use the same engine and physics, but obviously the gameplay is different.

As for the rest of the list, well done!

Again, this is a top 10. The next revision will have more titles with less meat in order to make it not be 30 pages long.

Thanks for the article. I thought the idea of listing free games was great. I don't see people complaining about the lists of games for windows only list commercial games, just cause you have to pay for windows doesn't mean you have to pay for the game.... ok never mind

I must also say FreeCiv needed to be on the list. I realise it's a limited top ten list but I can't believe Civ wasn't represented.

I am surprised also, even though it's not really my type of game. As I said in the article, the names and ranks were gathered by "votes" in a few forums and from friends. The next version of the article will include votes from a LOT more people than this one.

Thanks for the nice comments also.

Excelent Article!

Cool article! Thanks!

I already knew some of the games (I'm a big ET fan) but most of them are now on my "to try" list. I'm looking fwd for the 30 games list! :)

Thanks also to everybody that posted other game suggestions! I'll look at them too.

Thanks for the comments! I am looking forward to writing the next installment, and really should soon. CES added a lot more to my plate, so we'll see what happens.

ET is a definitely favorite for many, although I could never get into it. Not personally into that genre, although I never really gave it that much time either. Will have to in the near future.

Single-player FPS

Anybody know of a good single-player FPS? It seems like all the good ones mentioned in this article and others I've read are networked, deathmatch-style games, which I'm not interested in.

Thanks!

Good Article

I have to say thanks for the article. I just installed Linux recently, and it has been a long time since I've used Linux. I wanted to find some good free games, and this list provides me games to try out. As for playing some games for windows(yea i know this is about free linux games), you can always try wine to play them.

Should've added BZFlag

I am kinda sad that BZFlag didn't make it on the list. It really is one of the better games. The main objective is to enter a room, and shoot all of the other tanks as many times as you can. You can find it here.

http://bzflag.org/

And the best part is, they have binaries for all sources!

Because of the huge demand for a follow-up, there will be one within a month. To create a new (and larger list), I will be referencing this thread and many others where the topic has been discussed, and build a list with all the games that people were upset didn't make the list. Stay tuned...

NetPanzer of course

I can't believe there is no mention of the best online game of all: NetPanzer. Have a try and you will love it. And, by the way good luck during the game... ;)

Thanks

This list and the Civilization suggestion have given me much to do on the trains and buses now that I have moved my work laptop off of Windows. (well, I work in support, so there is still a Windows partition on there in case I need to see what I am telling someone to do)

PS you have the most difficult image verification ever. 2 failed attempts thus far.

PS you have the most difficult image verification ever. 2 failed attempts thus far.

The reason it's semi-difficult is because it eludes spammers greatly. We do not have a problem with spammers like other forums do. I'll change back to use the ImageMagick library instead of GD and see if it effects the spammers. It should be easier to read.

Let me know if you try again and have additional problems.
