Hi all,

I went here North Sea Jazz was pretty cool this year, the first time I went :) I do have a wide taste of different music. Here's some of the guys that I've seen live pretty cool!

Pat Metheny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irvgO8ijPyg
Marcus Miller: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BndeCNt_srI&feature=related
Earth, Wind and Fire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM84c-r5bVo

It was a cool experience. I was especially curious seeing Pat Metheny live. Although I like the band more when it's complete with vocals and the trumpet. You guys heard of this festival?

Greg King

I just kinda show up...

I haven't heard of the festival but good music is good music. As long as it moves you, genre doesn't matter.

Haha, any festival sponsored by Grolsch can't be so bad! Sounds good, although jazz isn't quite my thing.

I think it would have been cool to see Earth, Wind and Fire live though, haha.

Yes it was definitally cool seeing them live. I don't like all jazz either, I have a wide taste of genres that a like. I have some artists I'm interested in. The genre isn't always imported when it comes to that. I like the improvisation mostly in jazz, although sometimes it gets a bit too much depending on the artist.

Funny thing is I have became a fan of Pat Metheny group. Some guy listened to them at work I used to not like it, but now I like it lol. They don't really play one genre, but it mostly relates to jazz influences. It's nice to see different elements combined in their music really.

As I said I have a wide taste of music that I like, differing for genres like: jazz, pop, rock, classical, brass, hardrock / metal (when there's a nice melody in it) even some electronic music. I guess I am somewhat weird LOL! I don't like the shouty modern hiphop/rap nonesense lol.. except the old school way lol..

I don't call liking a bunch of different genres of music weird. It just means you have a wide-range of tastes, and are open to all sorts of music... there's sure nothing wrong with that. Variety is the spice of life, after all :D

A little offtopic I have recently been amazed by this guy...

Saw that video before, it's great! Don't listen to that band often, but I keep telling myself I should. Something tells me you might appreciate this video. It's a five-piece metal band that plays with no instruments, except for drums. They also did an interesting cover of Metallica's "Battery". It's not the best, but given the circumstances, and the band, it's cool.

Just curiosity, what music do you prefer?

I'm kind of all over the place too, but I'm mostly into dance and all variants of. One of the reasons I'm so interested in the Netherlands is because it seems to be the breeding ground for some of the top DJ's around. Tijs Verwest, Armin van Buuren, Paul Elstak, Headhunterz, and of course Ferry Corsten. There are others, but none that I truly care for. But all those alone make up the majority of the reason why I like that kind of music so much.

If I'm not listening to dance, I'm listening to punk or metal generally. I do like some hip-hop, but I'm very fussy there, and find few artists there that end up grabbing me.

If you really dare, my entire music collection is basically categorized here :D

I know these guys, yes this is actually pretty cool. I like the classic Metallica albums, I'm not much fan of the new stuff they play now. When Cliff Burton passed away the best part of the band died if you ask me. I think he was one of the best metal bassists out there. He was amazing. Well I think John Myung (Dream Theater bassist) is also a great bass player..

I do like some of that trance too, yes Armin van Buuren I think is the best Dutch deejay. I especially like the classic trance like for example:
Renegade legion - Weeping Waste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWj5ZL_NRtk

lol so am I! For example I do like this lol.. But then again this is somewhat different to the modern stuff..
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The message: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wkw_ijnsqw

If you really dare, my entire music collection is basically categorized.here :D

I will attempt to have a look at it LOL! :p

Yes I also like as I mentioned in my previous post - Dream Theater.. Except I don't like the singing. I do think that sounds a bit whiny lol.. I do like the guitarist John Petrucci. Some people criticize him playing to technical with lack of emotion. I can understand this, but for example the Octivarium end solo on the Score DVD is the complete opposite. I have currently lost a little interest in that band I must admit though. This goes for a lot of bands. It happens I like a particular musician in some band and for that reason keep track of that band.

I had the same kind of distaste for quite a while, but they've been growing on me a bit. It's my friend's favorite band, and he looks up to Petrucci big time (friend's also a guitar player). The voice does take some getting used to... same with a lot of those melodic metal bands (Coheed and Cambria is another that took me a while to get into).

That's not too bad really, but not quite my style. Never been huge into psytrance, but once in a while I'll hear a track that blows me away. Like these:

Here's some random techno/trance:

Yes Vibrasphere is nice :) they have a couple of nice mixes. Although I must say the melodies aren't quite complex.. lol yet I still find it relaxing to listen to this music.

Recently I found this track I really like, I figured you might like it too :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD2YNsLe0Dc

The sound quality isn't great unfortunately. Yes I like some of these tracks you've posted nice ! :)

I hear ya! Although I can just be amazed of one single musician in a band and focus to that particular part of the whole sound of the band. In Dream Theater's band I like to listen to all instrumental parts. I think they got a lot of talent there, except the singer isn't inspiring me. I like music that has been build up nicely and mostly variety is the secret! Yet some songs are way too long and a bit too intense I think.

I like this track you posted most :) Marc Marberg with Kyau & Albert - Orange Bill.

It's VERY relaxing, and almost takes you to another world. If music can do that, then it's good music.

Very nice... the album cover there describes the track perfectly I'd say. Like the Vibrasphere, the music is like a journey... amazing stuff.

Gouryella (one of my favourite trance artists)

The unfortunate thing is that they've only got a handful of tracks. I've been hoping for Tiësto and Ferry to hook back up and produce some more, but it doesn't seem like it's going to happen. Especially since Tiësto seems more keen on making as mainstream a sound as possible lately :-(

Yup, that's another major classic... one that will never get old. Kind of like Greece 2000 for me :D

You'd be amazed how much alcohol can help that problem! I'm not sure what it is about the voice, but it sure doesn't seem to hurt the band any... they've done very, very well for themselves. I agree with you on the instruments though, they all play amazing music.

Here's a video I just remembered:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT3CuibES7Y

What do you mean they're intense? :D When he says "That was very difficult", I can't help but laugh out loud. He's trying to remain so modest for the camera, haha.

This website is nice for finding good quality of music in a variety of music genres. I like to sneak in there once in a while :) http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/music0.html

Damn, bookmarked! Looks pretty comprehensive... will take a look later :D

LMAO!! That was just what I meant but they sure are great musicians. They are very down to earth too really. They keep their personality if you ask me I think that is rare.

I like his new guitar :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjQEAb6VT-E LOL he looks a bit like Jesus now :O

Yes I agree it's just a few tracks. Alot of those tracks have been top of the class. I don't like any of Tiësto latest works either. It sounds too commercial. I have seen in him in Amsterdam, the performance was so not like Tiësto to me, just not right lol.. in my opinion..

Been a LONG while since I've listened to stuff by Sven Väth. Not entirely into that track you linked, but it's inspired me to take a look through his other tracks again soon ;-)

Haha, maybe that's the look he's going for. Friend just saw DT a couple of weeks ago... I'll have to ask him if he looked the same at the show there.

How long ago was that Tiësto show out of curiosity? I managed to see him right at the launch of his In Search of Sunrise: Asia album (June 2008) and his show was unbelievably amazing. He played some of the mixes off that album, and also a ton of his classics, from Lethal Industry to Traffic.

The last album bummed me out a ton. I own about 17 of his albums (nothing from the Magik series, yet), and Kaleidoscope was the first one that really made me scratch my head. It's clear that he's either interested in becoming more popular outside of Europe related nations, or he really does need to change things up to keep things interesting for him. I don't blame him, but it does suck for the fans who've been listening to him for a while. I think you'll find few old-school fans of Tiësto digging his latest stuff.

"You Are My Diamond" and "I Am Strong" are two exceptions for me off that album, because I really like both. But neither of those are trance, and are more pop/dance/house than anything. It's kind of disconcerting that he discontinued his ISOS series and is creating a new one (A New Dawn)... I think the trance Tiësto is done :-(
