ATI Radeon HD 5830 - AMD Completes its HD 5000 Line-up

In what might be a record, AMD managed to release both the first and final normal model from its HD 5000-series in a mere five months. The final card is of course the HD 5830, which falls comfortably between the HD 5770 and HD 5850, and has the $240 price tag to prove it. So regardless of your given budget today, AMD has a card for you.

i can't believe its been 5 months since the HD5000 series came out and no sign of Nvidia!

i agree with the DX11 feature and power consumption part being what would make this card a better choice than the GTX260!
i'm soo wanting to buy a new GPU this summer and ATi is looking really impressive! and tempting, lol!

any idea on the Power consumption and Temps.?

Yeah this is a great value card. I've always thought the 5770 was too weak and it sells for $200 locally here. :/ Which is basically a 4890 so I didn't think it was worth it. With the 5830 out and selling between $215-240 there's finally a reason not to go for the 4890 over the 5770.

I remember when the 5830 was first rumored to be a sub $200 card. While I figured that wouldn't happen due to the huge price gap between the 5770 and the 5850 part of me really hoped it would since this would be a great bang/buck card if it were to hit that price point.

Looks like I won't be touching this card until prices start to drop.

C'mon Nvidia. Release your cards already so I can get in on the ground floor of a cheap upgrade.

Haha, there IS a sign of NVIDIA. The launch date for Fermi has been announced, so let's sit back and see how things play out, shall we? ;-)

I left this information out of the review on purpose, simply because the card we received wasn't even what we could consider a reference, so I don't entirely believe our findings should be considered accurate.

Yup, if that rumor held true, then the HD 5830 would be an amazing offering. You can kind of understand why AMD is doing things the way it is, though... there's just no competition right now. As it stands today, ATI cards do hold a bit of a premium, but if you at all care about things like DX11, and superb power consumption/temperatures, the premium is worth it.

Yep, yep. I'm curious to see what the prices will do when Nvidia finally gets their act together and roll out their Fermi's. I also wonder if the rumors are true that AMD will have their next gen card ready to roll by Q4 2010/Q1 2011.

If AMD's train keeps rolling along like it has been for the past year and a half, I'd say that there very-well could be a new launch later this year. It'd be kind of unbelievable though, given that the current-gen cards kick ass, and the first model just came out this past September. I wonder if the company will ever become efficient enough where it will just move to an Intel-like schedule. I could see it happening.

In order for them to really take a bite out of the Green Team I say they should push forward with the new launch late this year, regardless of how well their current line up is doing. Some consumers may complain that their card will go EOL earlier than it really should but AMD pretty much owns the GPU market as it stands now so why not keep moving forward faster than the competitor for a change?

They are finally doing something right with the CPU line as well so keep the ball rolling. You don't win anything by sitting back and kicking your feet up. Just ask the Canadian men's Olympic hockey team.

I'm not an AMD fanboy but I like healthy competition. It was nice to see Intel get put in their place with the anti-trust lawsuits because they held AMD back for so long just as it is nice to see Nvidia finally asleep at the fabrication switch.

Now that the playing field is pretty much level again on both the CPU and GPU front I think we'll really see some action.

Well you got a baby so its understandable that you want to save money on computer builds

I don't have any kids but I'm still pretty cheap. lol. I like to think of it as being smart with money.

The EOL issue is a good one. That kind of schedule isn't far different from Intel's as I mentioned, but the one difference is, once Intel releases either a tick product, it doesn't wipe out the tock before it. For example, when Intel's Lynnfield came out, it didn't render Nehalem's EOL, but it did pretty much render most Penryn's from the year before as EOL. So I guess where Intel has a 2-year release cycle, AMD, if they released a new architecture later this year, would be more like 14 - 16 months.

As for AMD, I certainly wouldn't say that the playing field is level, because it's far from it. AMD can only currently beat Intel by pricing alone, and that is immensely scary. You know that AMD's highest-end CPU is just $180? I don't see AMD going anywhere for a while, but I think we'd all feel huge relief if it pulled something amazing out of its hat, and soon.
