    Altec Lansing PT6021

Addendum (more bonus content for the forum folks) I had the opportunity to compare the PT6021 system to my Cambridge Soundworks MicroWorks II system, which I've owned since the summer of 2006. The CSW MicroWorks II offers a warmer overall sound, without the depressed midrange of the PT6021's...

What's the model number on your drive? (i.e. STxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx...) This will help me in finding the answer.

All American Computers.. An Inside Look

The problem in the enthusiast market (which is incredibly competitive since anyone can get the parts off the shelf) is that there's virtually no money in it. If one takes a look at the car audio market (where subwoofers are built-to-spec by large build houses and sold by small cottage-industry...

    Altec Lansing PT6021

By phase alignment, I don't mean like the user-adjustable knob on today's powered subwoofers. I'm referring to the phase alignment between drivers in a full-range speaker, which is typically accomplished to some extent or not at all by today's passive crossover networks -- creating phase shift...

    Altec Lansing PT6021

The Altec Lansing PT6021 system is particularly intriguing, because of its apparent orientation toward home theater use. With the popularity of the home theater or "media center" PC, I think this review provides a valuable chance to comment on the HTPC phenomenon and the role that PC speaker...

    Altec Lansing PT6021

The InConcert driver arrays aren't true line arrays. If they were, all of the drivers in each satellite would reproduce the same frequency band. Instead, there's some frequency shading going on (with the outermost drivers only operating up to 1500 Hz and the second innermost set of drivers...

    Reading VGA fan speed

I think I'll be going with an mCubed TBalancer fan controller in my desktop rig, which should be able to not only tell me what the GPU fan is doing, but also provide full control (with user-editable speed-vs.-temp curves) so that I can accomplish the fullest level of noise-optimization.

Considering the fact that this card is going to be upgraded pretty soon to a DX10 card, shouldn't the OP go for the least expensive option that will still provide the requisite graphics performance for the existing software? (Then, once the DX10 cards are out in force, the OP can go for a more...

    Stock AMD HSF Units

There are two things with CPU coolers these days -- noise and longevity. For a long time, AMD used a Delta fan that used one ball bearing and one sleeve bearing, and these fans still began to show wear after a few years of use, becoming noisy though not failing altogether. An upgraded...

HD RPMs...is there a big difference?

The faster drives will help with load time, and also with things like video editing, where a lot of data needs to be read quickly from the disk. The mechanical-ness of hard drives presents a major system bottleneck these days, which is why you have so much to-do about hybrid hard drives...

Project : DST (Dallas Stars Tribute)

I see you used a fly-cutter when cutting out the acrylic disks. This is smart. When I had to cut some circles from acrylic for a recent class project, I used the typical hole saw (as one would use with wood) and had trouble with the acrylic melting around the saw blade, and the drill motor...

    Selecting a Power Supply

Well, so it is. Silencer 610: 7.1" deep ATX Standard: 5.9" deep So, the Silencer 610 is actually 1.2" deeper than the standard ATX power supply. I suppose I should have done more homework before I said that it looked like a standard ATX power supply, instead of just eyeballing it.

With the exception of the GPU, it looks like you've got an overall good performer there. It ought to run games fine for a couple years, and you still have a platform for minor upgrades if you decide that's necessary at any point in the future. The GPU you've selected, however, is not the most...

    Selecting a Power Supply

It looks like any other standard-length ATX power supply to me. You should be good in that case even with an extended-length power supply like their Silencer 750W. Welcome to the forum.

    DFI Infinity 975X/G

I would argue that on a board like this, the passive northbridge heatsink isn't a 'con' -- it eliminates a common point of failure and noise. If it provides enough dissipation area, I'd actually call the passive NB a "pro". That's my take.

    Reading VGA fan speed

I'm taking a look at the review for the ASUS EAX1650XT card, and I notice that the blower has a three-pin output, presumably for RPM feedback. Is there a good utility out there that can let me read the VGA fan's speed? Eventually, I think I'd like to splice the wires together into a...

Tell Me What PC parts to get

A good middle-of-the-road rig It sounds like the OP wants a fairly upper-midrange rig, rather than the biggest, most fire-breathing, tweaked-out whatever. Coming up with a hardware configuration in such a sea of viable choices is difficult these days, and I'm a bit worried that this will put...
