Digsby Takes Bloatware to an Entirely New Level

I've also had bad experiences with open source software. Open source == too many chefs in the broth, far as I'm concerned.

installed a Lg SATA DVD burner and my PC freeze 10 min the sing of welcome of xp

Don't worry about it... I've put SP3 into dozens of computers without any problems at all. The SP3 link I gave you at the top of this thread is right on Microsoft's website, it's all microsoft code... really... it won't be a problem. YOU may not be running any tasks, but XP might... when idle...

    ASRock, Asus and Nvidia.

Absolutely... from my (admittedly limited) experience with the Atom processor I wouldn't even consider a single core. I still recommend that people do video and data crunching on their main computers and leave the ASRock as a networked playback device. I'm using these things like overgrown...

installed a Lg SATA DVD burner and my PC freeze 10 min the sing of welcome of xp

Have you installed service pack 3? Really... it's completely safe to do even on pirated copies of XP and between the bios adjustment and the service pack you should get rid of the problem. For the CPU usage... how high is it? 5 or 10 percent is not unusual when it's doing background...

    If you had 3 computers....

Yep... computer names are actually DNS lookups, just like websites, except handled by your router or switcher... I type in \\Amps in an explorer or browser window ... it goes to the router for DNS, gets converted to 192.168.222.20 and up comes the share list. So... why not have a little fun...

    Incredible lightning...

In case you're interested, here's what lightning looks like in my neck of the wooods ... This was taken a couple of blocks from my apt building on August 9th.

    Incredible lightning...

Quite often with high altitude lightning like in the video there is very little or no thunder at all. The thunder clap we hear during ground strikes is actually caused by instantaneous heating of whatever's being hit.

Actually Rob, almost all ODDs have a small drill hole in the front cover. If you straighten out a paper clip and push it into the hole, with a little bit of probing you can push the tray mechanism to open it just enough to grab and pull the tray open. From experience I can tell you that if...

Poor Passwords a Larger Threat than Malware?

You would be amazed how many people use default passwords or silly things like their first name is the user name and their last name is the password. My favorite is the guy who uses the same password everywhere.... My trick is to take longish words like "anthropomorphise" and sort the letters...

    ASRock, Asus and Nvidia.

Ahhh... that's the traditional definition. These little guys are mostly intented to be attached to TVs, I think.

You can download SP3 as a "network installation" (i.e. one big file) HERE It will install clean over any running XP installation with no re-activation or validation checks. After installing it you should disable Automatic Updates as you will want to keep your system in that state for quite...

    ASRock, Asus and Nvidia.

I agree. The ASRock Ion machines rely heavily upon the NVidia chipset for what they do. The ION versions play 1080p just fine using Media Player Classic and it's built in codecs... just finished watching "I am Legend" at 1080p and it went along perfectly. However, there is a lesser version...

installed a Lg SATA DVD burner and my PC freeze 10 min the sing of welcome of xp

Rob's suggestions are good. I've seen IDE cables cause some seriously strange behavior in computers. If this just started when you put in the SATA drive, there are a couple of extra things to check... 1) XP isn't particularly smart about SATA drives before service pack 3 so you should...

Recording Industry Planning New Digital Format, "CMX"

ooooorrrrrr.... they could include zip extraction in their players. I was thinking more like a true ISO (CD Image)... it's all one file that could be unpacked on the fly and cherry picked for what the player can do... or, as you suggest, handed to an archiving program to be broken out into...

    Incredible lightning...

I'd say we get one like that a year. There are usually several of the more ordinary type thunderstorms during the summer months. Our local weather service doesn't even count it as a thunderstorm unless there are multiple gound strikes. One year we had a thunderstorm while it was snowing, in...
