Integrated Graphics a Thing of the... Future..?

If there existed a Z77 six-core CPU, X79 and SB-E would have no reason to exist - outside of the extreme example where someone needs the massive memory bandwidth a quad-channel controller can offer (not a regular enthusiast). I'm still at a loss as to when the next -new- six-core is due. It...

    Blu Ray Burner/Remote Advice Needed

Are you planning to hook this PC straight up to the TV? If not, you'll want to consider a media player as well, unless the TV is able to stream from a network.

    SysAdmin Corner: Demystifying RAID

If you're going to be RAIDing SSDs, I recommend avoiding 0 at all costs, even if it's just throw-away data. Some SSDs throw fits on random occasion that could screw you over. RAID 1 or higher would be fine.

Microsoft Accused of Wasting $70K in Power to Avoid Fine

It's 'extra' when the company tries to charge MS $210,000 instead of the $70,000 for the power they didn't use.

    SysAdmin Corner: Demystifying RAID

Welcome to the forums, SporadicMovemnt, and thanks for the nice comments :-) We're dreaming up some new ideas for SysAdmin Corner, so we hope to have more content up in the near-future. We're always up for suggestions as well if there's a particular interest.

    Apple logo irony

I just can't get over Apple sometimes. Earlier this month, it tried to sue an online grocery store just because it had a freaking apple in the logo: http://www.webpronews.com/apple-sues-online-grocery-store-over-its-logo-2012-09 and then, Apple gets denied a patent for an orange icon with...

What Order Have You Used Linux Distros In?

An interesting question is posed over at Network World today, by "Linux Tycoon" and funnyman Bryan Lunduke. Simply put, is there such thing as a "best" distro order for learning and becoming absorbed into Linux? Or rather, does the first distro you use kind of determine where you eventually end...

Integrated Graphics a Thing of the... Future..?

Just to be clear, X79 is for Sandy Bridge-E, not Ivy Bridge. IB is technically superior architecturally to SB-E, but it lacks the quad-channel memory controller and six-core options. At the moment, I am not even sure when the next six-cores are speculated for release... all Haswell talk...

    Blu Ray Burner/Remote Advice Needed

Unless you have a specific reason to pick up a burner, I'd save $20 or so and just opt for a standard drive. BD-ROM media is still expensive for what it offers; it'd cost something like $200 for 2TB of BD-ROM media whereas a 2TB HDD costs almost half. Not familiar with remotes too much, but for...

Microsoft Accused of Wasting $70K in Power to Avoid Fine

I understand how it happens also, but that doesn't overshadow the fact that MS could have just been charged the excess amount without having to use it. If the power company allocates a certain amount to Microsoft, then that amount should be Microsoft's minimum bill each month. Instead, it seems...

    Thecus N5550 5-bay SMB/SOHO NAS Server Review

In an environment where uptime and data security is of paramount importance, a 5-bay NAS is an interesting proposition with its allure of huge storage and the ability implement a hot spare. Thecus' N5550 only adds to the intrigue with its huge feature-set including a USB 3.0 port and 2GB of RAM...

The *Official* I'm Pumped For Borderlands 2 Thread AKA Here's My Wallet, Randy!

Pre-order or not, $10 is still expensive as hell for that. Also: http://www.facebook.com/logitechgaming/app_409910639062311 (at a chance to win a BL2 mouse) and: http://www.bl2wiki.com/Borderlands_2_Wiki OFFICIAL WIKI, WOOT. No more of that ad-ridden Wikia!

New Exploit Can Wipe Your Samsung Galaxy S III with a Single Line of Code

I still don't get the appeal of custom ROMs, aside from this particular sort of thing. I'm fine with what I'm given for the most part, but I do spruce things up with GO Launcher on either the phone or tablet. I rooted my tablet last month and I am still not sure what benefit that availed me.

    Apple's A6 SoC Gets Unmasked

It's not uncommon to see the folks over at iFixit take a brand-new device and, without hesitation, disassemble it to show us what it's made of. Today, however, things are taken a bit - okay, a lot - further. They've teamed up with Chipworks, who have taken Apple's latest A6 SoC, hit it with an...

New Exploit Can Wipe Your Samsung Galaxy S III with a Single Line of Code

We posted a story last week where Android phones, the S III in particular, could be compromised via NFC, and this week, we have one that definitely beats it. In last week's story, the major risk was that the person who gained access could suck down all of your data, while with this...

The *Official* I'm Pumped For Borderlands 2 Thread AKA Here's My Wallet, Randy!

Is it just me, or is $10 for a character a significant amount of cash? I am just putting things into perspective. If the four main characters were $10 each, it means the rest of the game clocks in at under $20 .

Microsoft Accused of Wasting $70K in Power to Avoid Fine

Fiona Apple was arrested not long ago for the possession of pot. I can't imagine the number of people she put at risk... But it's cool Microsoft, go ahead and waste all that power.

    SysAdmin Corner: Demystifying RAID

And for those concerned about that, there's SyncBack! http://techgage.com/article/using_syncback_to_synchronize_your_windows_folders/ Of course it gets complicated if saved games are kept in the game folder rather than inside the userdata folder, but it's a good start. Most reasonable...

Wipeout - Where Have You Been All My Life?

I dunno, I don't understand the appeal of shows like this. I think I might have watched them as a kid but for some reason I am just not drawn in at all. I do remember watching a show like this when I was visiting Greg once, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was called.
