List of worthwhile DOS games

Nice to see a number of titles not normally mentioned in the 'big lists'. Realms of the Haunting, one of those unknown gems; it was barely given any light to shine and thus most of the world never knew of it. A very complex game with some very unforgiving gameplay in places and puzzles rarely seen in a modern game. Live action cutscenes, voice overs for everything, 4 CDs long, dozens of hours of gameplay, a very unique blend of FPS, action, adventure and puzzle, all wrapped up in a supernatural horror mystery.

Master of Magic, another Microprose beast of a game, often missing from lists of nostalgia. It looked like Civ, but was a very different beast. It was a blend of two worlds, some units of which could pass through both. Magic reigned supreme with Wizards battling for control with their array of schools of magic. While noble in complexity, it was a very imbalanced game. Picking pure Life almost meant a certain win, the ability to summon a champion that once killed, can be resummoned again and again, keeping all his acquired abilities after each death. The school of Death could summon an army from the fallen, both from the forces of friend and foe, but what use is that against a champion that could never truly die.

The only other game I would add to the list would be Outpost, a space simulator of a different kind. Launching probes into space and starting a colony on another planet with barely any resources. Not just covering the surface, but building underground, often multiple levels; all while competing with a splinter colony. But it was very unforgiving at times. You could play the game 5 or 6 times and never successfully 'start' the game, as picking a location is more important than what you do when you get there.
