Dutch police ask 8K men for a DNA sample

Well this is rather interesting. In order to help solve a case of a murdered 15-year-old, Dutch police have singled out 8,080 men who lived in the area at the time and has asked them to donate a DNA sample. While a direct match might not be found, a partial match could be, leading the police to a family member that was the killer.

These men have the option to refuse giving a sample, seemingly without a caveat. Just how true that is, I'm not sure.

I'm divided on whether or not I'd provide the DNA sample. I'm never too thrilled with A) the government overstepping its boundries and B) being singled-out at all when I didn't do anything. It's hard to say.

What about you guys?

If I had a rock solid alibi for the time of the murder I'd tell them to take a hike, I'd have proof I wasn't involved in any way. Now, if I was innocent but had no alibi I'd probably just submit my DNA on the sole provision that the profile be destroyed after the case was resolved. And I'd want it in writing. Just because I don't like the idea of automatically being a suspect in future cases simply because they'd have my DNA on file. If they refused to destroy the DNA profile after the case was resolved, I'd tell them no.

"Dutch police have singled out 8,080 men"

That's not singling anybody out. That's called we don't know which way to go so we'll be as vague as possible.

So, the perpetrator is male. Good enough for us. We can has DNA cheezburger pls?
