Comet off guard

Last night, I was sitting here doing a bit of PC gaming, and out of nowhere, a comet soared through the sky and lasted about five seconds total before it completely disappeared. I'm confident it hit the earth, simply because it was so bright and "close", but I estimate it probably struck about 20 seconds after it disappeared on me. It was the curvature of the earth that caused it to disappear, not the fact that it crashed.

It was an incredible sight though, that's for sure. As soon as I spotted it, I uttered a far-too-loud-for-2:00AM "what the hell!", jumped up, grabbed the camera, and alas, no cigar. The thing lasted for about 5 seconds tops, so it was a bit disappointing, but exciting at the same time.

Tried looking around the Web to see if there was any information on it, but I can't find any so far. I am still amazed that I just happened to have caught it. If I was turned on any angle, or looking away from the PC for those few seconds, I would've missed it!

Wish we could see celestial objects where I'm at... at night the light pollution is so bad you don't even need a flashlight to walk around anyplace once your eyes adjust. And if there are clouds it gets all the brighter...

Tried looking again for any news on the comet? Usually they take a little while before images begin circulating... or maybe it was just more space trash falling out of orbit? :D

I've been battling myself over whether it was a comet or not, but after looking at images all around the Web of those, shooting stars and meteorites, the pictures of the comets is what matched what I saw best.

That's what best describes what I saw. That picture is taken in space of course, but what I saw had a similar green glow and orange/white center. The green glow was a bit larger on what I saw though, but I suppose that's possible given two comets aren't going to be exactly alike.

Figures you can never grab a camera when you need one. Sounds cool, Rob.

I for one would like to welcome our new alien overlords. :p
