ASUS G51J 3D 15.6" Gaming Notebook

The term "3D" has been used quite a bit over the past couple of months, and as it stands today, there's a fair bit of content available to those with capable hardware. But on the mobile side of things, support is just beginning to creep in. The first available option was from ASUS, with its G51J 3D, and we're taking a look at it here.

I remember entering a contest for one of these not long ago. Maybe it was the model before this but either way I had never been a fan of lappy gaming but what I read about it made me pretty interested. No luck on the contest but if I were to abandon my desktop Asus would keep me going with their ROG series.

Plus it looks really friggin' cool.

As far as I'm concerned, laptop gaming will never compete with desktop gaming, and it's for obvious reasons. On desktops, we have sweet 24" and larger monitors, and our keyboards aren't physically attached to them. But as far as gaming laptops <em>do</em> go, when you need one, it's hard to go wrong here.

But since I can't see in 3D anyway, i have other models I'd consider, like this:

I still want to vomit when I picture myself paying $3,000 for a mediocre notebook in 2004, which wasn't even good for gaming at the time, and today we have a powerhouse like this for $1,600. Incredible.

Look at the rig you use today. If you were to look back at something in 2004 that had your current processing power you'd probably be looking at a mini-server farm. It's crazy how much technology has dropped in price but it was bound to happen.

As something becomes mainstream people are not willing to pay specialty item premiums.

No kidding! It amazes me when I look back to a PC in an ad or something ten years ago... it's truly incredible how far we've come. We don't really notice it as we go along, but just looking back a few years really helps put it all into perspective.
