Anybody else try to get 3 years out of their computer?

Yup, gets a defrag once in awhile, and that's about it. Not bad for a Sears closeout special HP rig. I've been very impressed with it over the years. The 2mb of shared VRAM gives me the heebie-jeebies though........it's amazing that just 9 years ago, that was more than enough for most users...

Anybody else try to get 3 years out of their computer?

I have all of you beat........or rather, my mother does. She has a 466 Celeron she bought new in 1997. It's still used daily, several hours a day. Granted, it has an Antec PSU zip-tied to the back, but otherwise it's all stock, no replacement parts, no RAM upgrades, no nothing.

    Mechwarrior, anyone?

How much is too much for a video card?

I did the same as Rob. I never play over 1280x1024, and I really don't care about articulated shadows and resurfaced sprites. *grin* As long as it looks halfway decent, and plays smooth, I can live without all the eye candy..........for my eyes, anyway, I find that all the super-quality...

    Onboard card died last night.

"What mobo is it? And is it still under warranty? The reason I ask is that if the audio chip has gone bad, it's a pretty good indication that the rest of the board is going to crap out pretty soon." "That is not a good idea, because other stuff could go bad on the board. Unless I'm...

Corsair Unveils the World’s Fastest Production DDR2 and DDR1 RAM

Dual-core procs will certainly benefit from the headroom. What you're talking about is chicken and egg. Yes, we won't see the benefits of DDR3 until faster memory controllers are used (although we are already up to 1066mhz FSB on Intel and 2000mhz HT on AMD), but if the RAM isn't being made...

    Windows Media Center Format

Ok.......that's a little more than I needed to know..........I really didn't need your system serial number. *grin* Ok, you have an ATI Theater 550 Pro TV tuner card, jacked in with an nVidia 6200 onboard graphics chip. Jakal's suggestion should work for you, using an outside program to...

    AMD's AM2 vs 939

That's specifically what I said. Loosening your timings can allow your machine to run faster (particularly with the chipsets you mention). The first digit is your CAS. I'll state again: loosening your timings does NOT alter the fastest timings that the RAM will run at, but only allows for...

Read up a few posts. I already said that.

    have a PSU Question

I disagree strongly. VERY strongly. Your Rosewill PSU will have wider tolerances, less efficiency, etc etc. That might be alright for an older rig, but when you start talking amp requirements, don't even THINK about looking at a generic PSU.

How much is too much for a video card?

I'll agree, then throw in the "what do you need it for" part. If you're a generic home user, that might play the Sims and surf the web, a high-dollar vid card is a waste of your cash. TBH, unless you're a hardcore gamer, SLI is a waste of money, you will NEVER touch two cards worth of...

Corsair Unveils the World’s Fastest Production DDR2 and DDR1 RAM

I don't disagree there, but up until a couple of months ago, AMD was the lower seller. But remember, you can still buy PC133 if you need it. Sales longetivity has little to do with current machine sales. Y'all also have to remember that DDR2 was designed as a stopgap between DDR and DDR3...

    Windows Media Center Format

Uh, yeah.....the connection for your TV cable is on the input card, most likely the video card. List your system specs, and we can help from there.

    NVIDIA's SLI Shortchanges Gamers?

*ahem* This is shocking to you? Aside from video card drivers, how about little things like dual-core support, or even HT support for Intel procs? I can think of exactly two games that come with dual-core support, and that's not even out-of-the-box support. Yes, for a game to run SLI...

    AMD's AM2 vs 939

You're wrong. :D Latency is latency, regardless of whether a NB is involved or not (and I believe you mean memory controller, not northbridge). Latency, in its simplest form, is simply a measure of how many moves a particular memory chip needs to go from read to write. It's not exactly a...

Corsair Unveils the World’s Fastest Production DDR2 and DDR1 RAM

Most AMD computers do not. Almost every new Intel machine comes with DDR2, and with the AM2 coming out in a few months, most new AMD machines will come with DDR2 as well.

Converting an internal into an external harddrive... possible?

Eh..........not necessarily. Most "big box" machines come with limited hard drive space. 80-120gb isn't much, and most people don't want to open their boxes to install a new drive, or pay someone to do it. It's much easier to go buy an external drive, plug it in, and rock. I see the external...

    Pizza or Burger?

    LAN centers and the future

Madstork, you have some valid points, but those apply to all businesses, not just a LAN center........and I don't think the original question was Texas-centric? There IS a whole 49 states outside of yours........ *grin* Here in the Northeast, I'm not entirely certain a LAN center would do...

    Dell XPS Renegade

Me either. Alienware really took a hit when they started selling through Best Buy. With Dell really trying to lure the gamer's market, and Alienware feeling the burn of not being "boutique" anymore, Dell purchasing the Alienware name would almost be a smart move............
