Dell Releases World's Thinnest Notebook, Adamo XPS

Sweet looking laptop if you got $1800 to spare... Sometimes I wonder if they don't make these things simply because they can... At that degree of thinness it's got to be flimsy and easily broken --there just isn't room for much of a frame-- which relegates it more to a rich person's novelty...

IDT Audio issues and Windows XP

Ok, we're not out of possibilities yet... It sounds like Plug and Play isn't detecting the chip. There could be lots of reasons for that, including hardware defects, BIOS settings, software problems, CMOS Battery, etc. Lets start with the ones we can go after easily... In your control...

IDT Audio issues and Windows XP

Is it correctly enabled in your BIOS? Are you overclocking heavily? You might be going that one click too far and destabalizing some of the I/O devices FWIW... it's not just CPUs that mess up with too much overclocking. I had one system I couldn't overclock by more than a couple of percent...

    Mouse problems

Rob... don't forget that even if the USB plug is brand new and completely clean... that doesn't mean an unused jack in the computer isn't loaded with crud... It's real easy to forget the other half of the problem. Can you ask your friend to do a little experiment for us? Start with the...

    Mouse problems

Can you return it? There are a couple of things... 1) It might be dirt on the USB connector. Try dipping the connector (not the whole dongle) in rubbing alcohol and then inserting it into your USB port several times, while it's still dripping wet. This should clean the contacts for you...

    Cat betrayed his girlfriend...

Sigh... they live amongst us, they become like us.... Ever seen the videos of dogs saying "I love you" or "I want it"? It's only a question of time....

Need advice on choosing a PCI soundcard

Reading back over this I realize I never did comment on which soundcard you should consider if my other solutions didn't pan out.... Yes either the Soundblaster or the M-Audio cards are your best bet. M-Audio is the new name for "MIDIman" and ithe company is very adept with MIDI enabled...

Need advice on choosing a PCI soundcard

Yep... the first realtime streaming interface. Please note the difference... MID == file format ... MIDI == interface specification The pinouts for the connectors are HERE (With the caviat that I am not a musician.) That depends entirely upon what you're wanting to do with it...

Are You Upgrading to Windows 7?

Well, yeah... Every other version of windows does that. The two things you absolutly have to have working are the keyboard and video... everything else you can work around. You got around it by downloading from a different machine... but what about people who only have one machine...

Are You Upgrading to Windows 7?

Well, at least until they sort out some of the first blush issues with 7... Although with XP being the OS of choice in many new NetBook and NetTop systems, we may still have it's use for quite some time to come.

Are You Upgrading to Windows 7?

The installer actually bails on you? That's not good. A friend of mine ran into that with his sound card, but the installer continued... In the end he had to download the drivers on another machine, burn a disk and install them manually after the installation finished on it's own. With...

    Atheros wireless under Ubuntu...

OR, in this case, didn't have any real need for a dual booted laptop. Like me, he thought he'd best learn linux but never could get everything to work and the project stalled. I sort of knew that... but still, wireless --especially Atheros-- has been around a lot longer than a year and a...

Well as soon as the water is gone it's just powder so the lifetime is that of the moisture. That's why most heat sink greases are based on vegitable oils... Corn oil, for example, will actually cure into a rubber like consistency over time... Actually you'd be amazed how many "exotic"...

    Atheros wireless under Ubuntu...

Noted for future... except without the wireless working there was no way to do that. Although I suppose I could have burned a disk... Thing is it said it was using a driver from a non-free source, clicking on the taskbar icon showed check marks for Atheros VM and Atheros Wireless... but we...

    Atheros wireless under Ubuntu...

I just realized Rob doesn't have a "Networking" forum here... (Hint Hint).... Anyway, I've run into something I could use just a little help with... I have a Toshiba laptop with Ubuntu 8.04 installed. It also dual boots to Windows XP. These machines have Atheros wireless boards in...

Need advice on choosing a PCI soundcard

Well... there are a lot of misconceptions about what MIDI is and what it can do... First off MIDI is not a file format ... that's *.MID. MID files are MIDI sequences captured on disk, much like the paper rolls in player pianos (the true origin of "Be kind, Rewind", btw) They contain long...
