Apple's Not Fond of Microsoft's "Laptop Hunters" Ad Campaign

The actual figures were $300 in various price cuts, but still their cheapest laptop is now a meager $999... the specs on that thing can be had in some $400-500 laptops. Also the $999 Macbook uses the normal white plastic body, it doesn't even include the aluminum block body. Of course, $550...

    Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 320GB

USB is not built into hard drives, just as eSATA isn't built into hard drives. It's just a connector put on the microcontroller board that itself plugs into a standard hard drive. If you look at the photos you should notice this is a standard SATA laptop hard drive. ;) So if you wish to be...

    Our Processor Testing Suite

The LinX program does the same thing in Windows... but yes, it is interesting to see the Windows Performance Monitor completely flatlined at 100% across all eight displays. And compiling applications definitely has more use than a simple Linpack GFLOP test, although it was interesting that...

    Promises Plated in Chrome

Well, going by the blog post they were stripping the Linux kernel to the barest of minimums, for the obvious reason of what it's going to be running and running on. It would take awhile to figure out how far they can strip it down without compromising its ability to work on both x86 and ARM...

Two Core i7 and One Core i5 Lynnfield En Route

Yes, and actually I am very thankful for this. I remember when the Q6600 was launched in 2007 for ~$860... I watched it's price drop by 40%, then that new price dropped by another 40%... now it's a sub-$200 part! My point with my comment is that telling their most loyal Bloomfield customers...

    Promises Plated in Chrome

I've seen all manner of responses to Google's announcement of their Chrome OS... but again, I have to stress that from what technical info that's been given Chrome isn't going to be a real OS, just a bare minimum "sandbox" for the Chrome browser to run inside. If Anandtech got their info right...

Two Core i7 and One Core i5 Lynnfield En Route

I agree, and I think it clearly shows that Intel is more interested in the bottom line than catering to the enthusiasts that bought into the Bloomfield platform. On the flipside I should not be surprised, because Intel has a history of undercutting their performance/feature rich chipsets with...

How To Check Brand New Hard Disk

If you do not plan to use RAID then this is not an issue you have to be worried about. There isn't any guarantee that the drive isn't damaged or something unless you know this person. However Seagate drives have a 3 (sometimes 5) year warranty, so if the drive did turn out to be bad you...

Retail Employee Perspective of Bricks in Boxes

At least the bricked product would get tech support and a warranty... I don't think you'd want to me mailing that ACME brick in for servicing anyway. ;) While not directly mentioned by this article it strongly reminded me of the policy Gamestop has. Here's the linkThey allow employees to take...

Apple's Latest iTunes Update Breaks Palm Pre Support

By most estimates Apple only makes a very small profit from iTunes. Their iTunes offering is more useful to them as a means to facilitate the sell of more iPods & iPhones. At any rate there are workarounds to this. Link

    LCD Monitor/TV Question

Partly because 30" monitors are 2560x1600 resolution while a TV (regardless of the size) maxes out at 1920x1080 resolution. Also partly because they are price gouging, there's nothing better than a 30" LCD monitor so they'll milk it for all its worth... ;)

Two Core i7 and One Core i5 Lynnfield En Route

The frequency overlap (so I hear) is because the Core i7 920 is going to be EOL'd by the year's end or early Q1 of the next year. Not sure how credible it is but it certainly sounds logical enough, especially since I'm sure speedbumps will be coming out for Lynnfield by around March.

Are Notebook Coolers Worth the Cash?

To some extent, yes. But nobody should need to be running a notebook cooler when on battery power... when on battery power mine automatically underclocks the GPU and I configured it to underclock and undervolt the CPU as well. I'd love to do the same to the RAM, but that's just not possible...

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

Well, considering they concluded the damage was user caused it sounds like you still got a nice deal out of it! Many companies would just tell the customer "you ruined it, your fault, so no warranty" and leave it at that. Do make sure you never try to seat anything with the board powered...

    VirtualBox 3.0 Final Released

After reading the page on it VMWare ESXi doesn't install into an OS, it's a bare-metal hypervisor. Best for performance, but I'm lazy and I want to run everything inside an OS for simple management. I'm sticking with VMware Workstation. :) Let us know how it goes!

    Asus 25.5 monitor

Yeah, 1920x1080 is definitely going to stress your 9600GT in some games. It shouldn't be to bad though, just turn down a few of the settings and remove most AA.... the larger the screen the less AA you need to use to get the same quality image anyway. Hope ya enjoy your new monitor! :)

Are Notebook Coolers Worth the Cash?

I didn't write down the numbers (cooler was bought during a 2005 CompUSA black friday sale for $5) so I can't give them. As I best I remember the memory modules saw 10c+ drops in temps just from a tiny bit of airflow. The way the machine is built the heat from the DDR2 modules goes straight up...

    Current Overclocked CPU World Records

If you are interested in this sort of thing, here's the people that took 2nd place (now third) on the world frequency records Link Intel did make the claim that Bloomfield was supposed to out overclock Lynnfield, but you may be right. It will be interesting to see how that plays out, and how...

Are Notebook Coolers Worth the Cash?

I used an Antec notebook cooler on my DTR laptop... the DDR2 RAM underneath had no active cooling and so the machine was borderline on being to warm to even keep in my lap comfortably... and forget about being anywhere near the RAM modules. Unfortunately Antec's notebook cooler was pretty...

MacBook Pro 13" Can't Display Millions of Colors - Or Can it?

Rob's definitely referring to the panel type here. Most cheap LCDs are 6-bit displays, and use "dithering" to simulate the color depth of an 8-bit display. Honestly if Apple is using 6-bit LCD displays in their laptops then I'd find that surprising, and it hurts the arguement that users are...
