IDT Audio issues and Windows XP

Actually Rob, that might have been me... I routinely wait until the first service pack before upgrading OSs. This, because I"ve seen a lot of bugs and problems with several Windows versions over the years and I'm just jaded enough after the Vista fiasco that I'm going to play it cautious.

    Think your PC is dirty?

first off... Sorry if this is a thread hijack... that wasn't the plan. To put a button on this... There are few things in this world I hate more than Kiddie Porn. The last machine I came across that was loaded with it --40 gigs worth-- I sent the owner on an errand across town to get me some...

Setting Up Wireless in Ubuntu is Hit or Miss

Thank you for this Rob... I would however appreciate a bit more detail about wireless setup under Linux ... A Step by Step for entering SSID and Passwords would be very helpful... With me and Linux it's definately "See Spot Run" time....

    SATA GH22NS50 Freezes My Computer

I'd say you are lucky. The problem with the drive foundering is cause for you to put in the update, which has that "Bluebirds" virus in it... You could try the patcher from the LG site and see if that fixes it... but I think you'll be a lot happer getting away from LG altogether. Go...

    Think your PC is dirty?

LOL... The original concept of heirarchal inherritance... it doesn't matter what kind of mess you find, it's all your fault... been there for sure. I don't even want to guess how often I've put in long hours, at no charge, fixing the messes made by other techs. But in the end it's better than...

    Think your PC is dirty?

It's a risk every tech runs on every call. There's an old adage that a happy customer will tell one or maybe two people but an uhappy one will tell everyone they know... and it's pretty much true. But on the other hand you can't be completely pliant... especially when you find yourself...

    SATA GH22NS50 Freezes My Computer

Yep... take it back and get one from a reliable manufacturer. In the same budget range, either Pioneer or Lite-On should be ok. There have been numerous problems with LG drives of late... also see This Thread Needless to say you may want to avoid installing the software from the supplied disks.

    Think your PC is dirty?

:D Good one! Although it's not really germaine to dirty computers, that is a constant risk techs face in this day and age... "You did something to my machine so you can _______" One paranoid user can really wreck havoc in a word of mouth business. And thank goodness that hasn't happened yet.

    Think your PC is dirty?

LOL... and you didn't have to clean it up! I just put the thing is a double garbage bag and walked it down to the bin. The woman who owned it had her place fumigated and I put Boric Acid powder in all her electronics. She says her new multifunction printer is very nice.

Dell Releases World's Thinnest Notebook, Adamo XPS

One of my first "laptop" style portables had a handle... Pretty slick setup... the handle split with the case and slid back into the case halves to become all but invisible when the machine was in use. Of course this wasn't much like today's laptops, and weighed like a cement block... but it...

IDT Audio issues and Windows XP

Rob ... Try upping the PCI Latency. With the gains in buss speed and many issues of timing, it's not uncommon for the sound chip to be the slowest bit on the board. You can quite safely max it out... it's not a speed control. It's a time-out that prevents PCI cards from locking up your...

Need advice on choosing a PCI soundcard

You'll probably like that controller... however it's not a MIDI device. It's actually USB connected... which would eliminate the need for a second sound card. Not at all. It's a playback device, intended to be used with audiophile equipment... not musical instruments. A musician's...

    Think your PC is dirty?

Garooooose.... Worst one I've ever seen? A boat of turkey gravy dumped on a keyboard, which for mysterious reasons was on the dining room table at the time. A possible tie with that was an older flatbed scanner so full of cockroaches they actually jammed the mechanism.

IDT Audio issues and Windows XP

If you want my advice... especially for stereo speakers, head on down to the local computer store and fish a sound card out of their junk bin. Really... unless you have an extreme high end speaker setup, you won't notice much difference and you can claim environmental friendliness in recycling...

The Quest for Useful Real-World SSD Benchmarks

Lets hope it's more like 5 years of downloading, moving, backing up and renaming 4 or 5 movies a day. If it's just going to spin down to HDD performance after 300 1gb files, then it's both cheaper and smarter to stay with HDDs. Agreed... important information for anyone building disk...

The Quest for Useful Real-World SSD Benchmarks

Perhaps an example... Lets say you are testing write speed by copying files from one drive to another. The fastest this can possibly go is the speed of the slowest drive. So if you are moving files from a HDD to an SSD, you are actually testing the read speed of the HDD not the write speed...

The Quest for Useful Real-World SSD Benchmarks

Welcome to the age old problem... How do you test something that is faster than the test station you have to hook it up to? Variuos Content Creation may look disk intensive --"wow that light's been on along time"-- but it probably isn't. Odds are that any program writing large amounts of...

IDT Audio issues and Windows XP

Ok... so now we see what happens. Well, that's not a very good test... but it's better than nothing. ;) Good... BTW, SP3 seems to get updated periodically, which is truly weird... so depending when you last updated... Also... for the troubleshooting period... you should probably turn...
