    Mediaeval: A developer diary.

The actual map is saved to disk as a binary file in my own defined format. I decided not to use the .Net object serialization features because, quite frankly, it introduces a lot of bloat to the resulting binary file. I have no use for assembly and class descriptions and such. Once you go...

Have a Clean Mouth? You Get Plants vs. Zombies for Free!

Bullocks, I missed that! Darn! :( But that sure explains something that was confusing me: Why would Steam put Plants vs. Zombies in its Halloween sale if this offer was being made? Quite rude of them in any case! There was no info saying that and they did allow non US residents to get the coupons.

Don't worry. People with poor dental hygiene can get the coupons also. I know because I got mine.

Windows 8 Review - Part One: The Things I Hate

That's why you should listen to me more. :p Brett, the simple matter of fact is that DX10 (and 11... and 12 and 23) won't ever justify a exclusive operating system version until one of two things happen: The Graphics hardware radically changes The Operating System software layer radically...

    Mediaeval: A developer diary.

Yeah. And the biggest hurdle isn't even starting. The greatest challenge is getting them finished. The barriers to staying motivated are many, when it comes to personal pet projects. Many extremely successful in-their-career developers and whom I admire greatly, nonetheless can't to be able to...

    Mediaeval: A developer diary.

For the past month I've been working on the game map editor. An essential part of the backend of the game. Players won't use this, But I will, to set up new worlds. Game Map Editor main window Minimap detail. The minimap is automatically generated every time changes are made to the main map...

    Mediaeval: A developer diary.

Some months ago I discussed on these forums the possibility of developing a strategy game. Well, that time has come. For a little over a month I've been developing Mediaeval, a multiplayer-only grand strategy game where each player takes control of a nation and tries to see it through. This...

Windows 8 Review - Part One: The Things I Hate

Welcome to the forums, Hood6558 :) Careful... They did just that with Windows XP. Remember, for instance, DirectX 10 not being compatible with XP, for no other reason than Microsoft made it so? Fortunately for all of us DirectX 10 got a rather lukewarm reception by developers and never...

PS2 came out 12 years ago today

The only gaming console I ever owned (and didn't regret it one moment) was the PS1. What a great console that was. Ugly gray as hell, but looked beautiful then. Well, outside those dirt old consoles of the 80s, that's the only one I owned. I did buy a PS2 for the girls... thrice. It was quite...

    raspberry pi anyone?

I wonder... You said a few days ago that one of the reasons you didn't choose the 10KOhm thermistors was because you wouldn't be operating at their 0-30C range. However that's exactly what I'm seeing there. Wouldn't it be better to indeed go with the 10K? Also, but here I'm not sure... aren't...

    raspberry pi anyone?

Indeed. Double is a better bet given the circumstances. In fact, with or without the Aruino Due, unless you don't really need the extra precision and you are fine with 7 precision for < 1 and 6 precision for > 1, it's an almost guarantee that future iterations of the Arduino will come sooner or...

Windows 8 Review - Part One: The Things I Hate

Indeed! There's nothing outdated about Windows 7. Unless we want to start believing the Microsoft marketing pitch that says an Operating System launched 3 years ago and hailed as the best yet, is today a piece of crap incapable of dealing with current software and after all that was said is in...

Windows 8 Launches Friday - Will You Be Buying It?

ROFL. I love that photo. Can't get tired of it. The kid is priceless. Not one to praise memes. This one is as crap as anything else. But been a long while since one made me laugh.

Windows 8 Review - Part One: The Things I Hate

Can't wait to see what you found good that made you actually like Windows 8. Eagerly awaiting for that second article. Because unless you found a way for it to give money from the DVD tray, I don't know what can possible be there that nullifies what I just read. However, as a non desktop...

Windows 8 Launches Friday - Will You Be Buying It?

I would not recommend VirtualBox. Unless something changed in the meantime (which I doubt because this bug has existed for years), maximizing it in Windows is very likely to corrupt your mouse cursor if you are using a dual-monitor setup.

    Wednesday's PS3 4.30 Firmware Update to Remove Folding@home Client

Interesting read, thank you. I did only a diagonal read of it but it was immediately apparent there was a bias towards game performance analysis on such areas as rendering and physics calculations, which really do not match the type of calculations performed on the PS3 by the F@H client. For...

Windows 8 Launches Friday - Will You Be Buying It?

I will probably be forced into Windows 8 despite my many complaints about it. Let's be clear I don't agree with the UI philosophy, so my relationship with this OS is as bad as it can get. I trust the UI principles that we have been sharing since Windows 95 have been particularly beneficial to...
