    Kingston SSDNow M Series Bundle

Please elaborate. How does a SSD require *more* CPU usage? To the OS, the drive shouldn't matter, it sends the data to it, the drive takes care of it. It requests data from the drive, the drive retrieves it. It doesn't appear like CPU usage would be a concern at *all*.

    TV sets falling on kids...

TV's fall over easier than you might think. Yes a tube TV is a heavy mother fucker, but if the stand wasn't designed for it, it can easily tip. As Rob said, the TV's are front heavy, which puts a lot of weight on the front of the stand, its doesn't take too much work to push a set off when its...

In which Greg gets a "green" HDD

I think this would make a good article, how to build a PC with cool components and how they affect room temperature. Specifically if water cooling keeps the room cooler, although you would have to have a fan or something keeping the water cool. Perhaps fans vs. water cooling on ambient air...

    Our Graphics Card Testing Suite

Don't any games offer the ability to record a certain path and then play it back? I swear Counter-Strike had something like this. It was rendered on your PC however, so it would be useful for benchmarking.

In which Greg gets a "green" HDD

Please do explain how heat effects hard drive performance because I believe Google found that heat doesn't really make a difference.

    Common Reasons People Leave Linux

Nope you should be Cool & the Gang with that setup. No ATI to worry about and no RAID so it should work no problem.

    Common Reasons People Leave Linux

Which is exactly why my ATI x1400 works perfectly with Ubuntu 9.04? Oh wait... Or why suspend and resume work just dandy? Its these things that they *could* make work with the right config, but don't.

    Want to feel small?

This is why APOD is in my feed reader and always will be. A few minutes out of every day to realize how tiny this planet is really puts things into perspective. I would have absolutely loved to live in a time where travel across the galaxy is a reality. Some day it will be, but until then I have...

    Common Reasons People Leave Linux

Gaming is an issue, but I think a lot of people who are really into gaming probably aren't interested in Linux. If your trying to get every FPS possible then Linux isn't really where you want to go. At the end of the day what it comes down to IMO, is whatever people can get work down the easiest...

    Hello There, Ladies and Gentlemen...

Wow so you have a 1920x1200 resolution and you maximize your browser to use the whole thing? If so, why on earth did you pay for a monitor with that resolution if your only going to use one window at a time? You might as well have maxed out at 1280x1024. I use a 1680x1050 resolution and even...

    Hello There, Ladies and Gentlemen...

    Indeed I am. Unfortunely Cheap Trick isn't up my alley, but this is: <object width="425" height="344"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TgsoJrzplUI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></object>

Kindle 2 Text-to-Speech Feature Now Optional (to Publishers)

The cost is ridiculous. I haven't spent that much money on books in 5 years total. If they really want to get people reading they need to bring the cost WAY down. I'd argue that it would make more sense to sell this for cheap and then sell the books for a higher cost than selling this for as...

HTPC ... to the next level.

Its this reason that that I've seen quite a few guides now doing frontend type machines that offload the work to a backend HTPC box that is loud, hot, and ugly. Your machine in your living room can be small, quiet, and pretty and still function. I know Ars recommened a setup like this awhile...

HTPC ... to the next level.

Heh, I've had the "pleasure" of owning one of their cable modems and it was a POS as well.

    OCZ Launches PCI-E-based SSD, "Z-Drive"

I'd be interested to know if any actually do work this way. I'm not sure exactly how they would, unless its a custom system. AFAIK the BIOS would have to have special support otherwise I think it would start looking for a hard drive.

HTPC ... to the next level.

The problem is the computer part. Running an HTPC is great if you can get the OS to work correctly. I've had a lot of issues with Media Center under Vista, from randomly not recording to locking up the entire machine, to slow channel changing. Its just easier to have a TV without having to worry...

    Common Reasons People Leave Linux

Actually I would argue that installing programs in linux is easier than Windows. If your compiling from source in Linux, you run the same commands every time: ./configure make make install and your done. In Windows you no doubt have seen several different installer types floating around: .msi...

    Common Reasons People Leave Linux

Most people use what they first learned PCs with and in the majority of cases this would be Windows. Switching would be difficult because how you expect things to work, isn't they way Linux does them. The best article I've read on this distinction is here: http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

    Choices...

Ah this explains the mysterious boot delay's I've noticed. I've always figured it to be a poor BIOS implementation or something, but this would certainly explain it. I'm running an Intel RAID 0 with 2 drives (+1 data non-RAID) and there is a noticeable delay before the Vista logo (or I guess...

    Choices...

I would be led to believe that the RAID would be much faster than just 1 SSD, but I've been wrong before.
