    Well, it's about time...

So, today I pulled the GA-990FXA-UD5 out of my PC, bundled it back up in its box and returned it to Micro Center. I exchanged it for the ASUS M5A99FX Pro Rev 2.0 and installed it this afternoon. The system is nice and stable, the board has the requisite BIOS installed to support all the latest...

    Well, it's about time...

The past couple of days have been an adventure. Sunday, in anticipation of getting a new CPU (something else is in the works) that requires the latest bios I updated to what I thought was the latest beta bios. It wasn't, it was something they'd put out that was buggy. I no longer had core temp...

    Well, it's about time...

Last night I was able to get the 955 up to 3.5Ghz with no issue. Today I updated the BIOS and now the 955 won't OC in the BIOS at all. I can manually set the multiplier to 17.5 but when it POSTs the BIOS shows it at 16 and when it makes it into windows, yep, still at 16. Hopefully the BIOS will...

I got some ram for Christmas... so this happened.

    Well, it's about time...

I ended up picking up a GTX 760 for a buck twenty yesterday (used) but I figure, what the heck, if I run across another at (close to) that price I can SLI them and get 780'ish performance for less than a GTX 770.

PCI 2.0 board with a PCI 3.0 GPU

PCI-e 3.0 cards aren't at the point where they benefit from the added bandwidth over 2.0 so, yes, it will work just fine.

    Well, it's about time...

I was originally going to go with the new i5 Devil's Canyon CPU but then I got the 955 from a friend and got to looking at the AMD offerings and decided, what the heck, I could do a build in stages. First stage, get a mobo. Second, get some ram. Migrate over to the new mobo and ram with the 955...

    Well, it's about time...

I just did a wish list over at Newegg with all the upcoming parts, ram, CPU, SSD and GPU and it's $646 and change. This is going to be spread out over some months but I'm sure looking forward to it.

    Well, it's about time...

After four years of rocking the M4N82 DLX I'm on the path to an upgrade. Today I picked up my new motherboard, a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 Rev. 3.0. Soon I'll be picking up some DDR3-1866 CL-8 to go in it and then I'll be moving up from my measly Phenom II X4 940BE to my new powerhouse, an X4...

Bang The Box! (Mini-ITX Build Log)

From what I've been reading, when you run all slots loaded and bump up the core it kind of stresses the imc and can lead to instability or outright errors. Lowering the ram clock reduces the stress and might clear up the oddities you're encountering. Just an idea.

Bang The Box! (Mini-ITX Build Log)

I wonder if you're getting errors from the imc because you're running a full loadout on the slots. You might try clocking your ram down one step and tightening up the timings a tad.

Bang The Box! (Mini-ITX Build Log)

Yeah, run it again, I'm interested in seeing how it stacks up. I'm going to be doing a refresh on mine after 4 long years of running the same motherboard and CPU. When it's all done it should be pretty epic.

Bang The Box! (Mini-ITX Build Log)

I was just re-reading this and you were a bit dismayed about the lower physics score on the new rig, I think I can shed a bit of light on that. The physics score is not based on the GPU, rather it's a CPU test. You had your old rig OC'ed to 4.2Ghz versus the new CPU running at the stock clock...

GTX 980 sli or 970 sli for an old system?

After looking into your CPU I see it's socket 1366 which has been pretty much abandoned. The good news is that from what I've read, you only see a marginal difference between PCIe 2.0 and 3.0 In the tests I examined the differences were actually in line with the difference in IPC between the...

GTX 980 sli or 970 sli for an old system?

You could get the twin 980's now and later upgrade to a board that supports your CPU while bringing PCIe 3 to the party. Surely there's a newer motherboard out there that will allow you to keep the CPU.

DDR4 Supporting ATX ROG Mobos from Asus

Did Intel move to building the memory controller into the CPU ala AMD? Previously they used a memory controller that was in the northbridge which meant that the CPU could support multiple memory formats. Example: my room-mates EP45-U3DP recently died (he's got an older 775 C2Q) and the mobo he...

I dunno man... unless kittens, unicorns and rainbows come flying out of the fans when you turn the PC on I don't see how any other case could be better than that one.
