While CD Sales Are Down, Vinyl is on the Upswing

I'm sure by now no one will be surprised to hear that CD sales are on the decline, clearly being overshadowed by the rapid growth of digital variants. It's no surprise, either, since services like iTunes, Amazon MP3, 7Digital and others deliver what's essentially the same music, but at a lower price, along with added convenience. In taking a look at Amazon MP3 just now, I can see some brand-new albums such as Linkin Park's "A Thousand Suns" and Weezer's "Hurley" available for $6.99. It's sure hard to beat prices like that.

I have about 1000 LPs and two really good turntables and a bunch of cartridges, and I gotta say, I don't believe vinyl sounds any better that digital audio. There's no reason you couldn't digitize everything you hear on a record.

For me it's more about collecting/not forever starting over and all the great recordings that are still only available on vinyl.

A lot of it has to do with the artwork, the liner notes, and let's face it, nostalgia too.

Edit: Also, 2.5 million records in 2009 is peanuts. KISS sold what, 100 million records? That averages out to 2.5 million/year for the last forty years for just one artist.
