We have been a fan of SabayonLinux for quite some time, so we could not pass up a chance to tinker with their heavily anticipated new version. In addition to updated software, 3.3 brings about a new color scheme. It's also touted as being more stable, so let's put it to the test.

SuSE Kicker...

Hi Rob,

Great review!

Just wanted to let you know of another distro that uses SuSE's Kicker, Pardus Linux http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/. It is a Turkish distro and the developers seems to have done a lot of new thinking making it.

Among the highlights are a very good package manager with a great GUI. Good automatic updater app and some really great apps in theri repo. For example VirtualBox, Xara, Tremolous, Nexuiz among others.

Try it, I thing you will like it, maybe so much that you do a review of it also

Thanks for the comments! I was actually on the Pardus site the other day, but none of their screenshots show off the kicker. Their package manager looks quite nice though.

I will download it and take a look when I have the chance. Looks like a solid offering! Too many new distros become available that are basically hack jobs of other distros.. it's good to see Pardus adds it's own package manager and boot scheme.

test it out on Apple computers?

Hi,

Enjoyed your review, but didn't see any details on running it on Apple computers. Any probs or special parameters or anything needed?

I was actually looking for a LiveCD for recovering or troubleshooting an Intel MacBook.

Hi Doug,

I didn't write much about testing it on Apples because I don't own one. As far as I know, the people who tested it out on an Apple didn't have much of an issue. Sabayon has great hardware detection, so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Hi Rob,

I ran into the same problem that you did with Beryl on 3.3. I couldn't figure out what the problem was....so I just changed from AIGLX to XGL in the acceleration manager. I have an NVIDIA card so was skeptical that this would work or work well....but it worked and now everything works like a dream!

Only problem I still have is installing onto my Dell laptop....installation keeps hanging and is a major problem...but I'm still trying. I think its just my Dell DVD reader (hardware).

Its a good distro

SL3.3 is inteed a great distro, having been an avid user of Ubuntu for a while, i actually like the fact that there is a huge amount of software installed, i have the hard disk space, and i get to see alternative applications, which i may not necesseily use. or know about. I work on the assumption, ts better to be overloaded and have a tool for a job, than not.

That being said, the installed SL3.3 drivers for the BCM43xx do work, but are painfully slow, the forum discusses this, and a quick switch to Ndiswrapper resolved the problem on my Dell 1501.

I would happily recomend this as a distro.

Ahh good catch, I used AIGLX the entire time. I will give XGL a shot next time. Good luck on getting it working on the Dell. Are you trying to dual boot? Maybe you will need to manually partition it first.

I agree completely. I don't use Sabayon as my regular distro, but even using the Live DVD, I find a few programs I've never heard of (which I've since installed on my own rig).

I hear about that problem with BCM43xx as well, but I have not tested it out. That "workaround" is the same one I've seen being thrown about as well. As least it's an easy fix.

usb-snd-audio problems

Hi,

I don't think that this is an issue which you can blame on Sabayon Linux.

I have had installed the latest masked alsa-driver available in portage on Gentoo, but alsaconf, did not recognize my on-board-sound C-Media CM 6501.

I think alsaconf does not check for usb audio devices. But that was no big problem (after I configured my kernel the right way ).

I built the kernel with usb-snd-audio support and added

alias snd-card-0 snd_usb_audio
alias sound-slot-0 snd_usb_audio

to /etc/modules.d/alsa

If you make sure that "alsasound" is run
during boot, everything should work fine now.

ANALOG VERSUS DIGITAL CONNECTION

I just install sabayon on mi pc
one thing I notice is that every time I install sabayon on mi system I have to use analog connection on my screen
after the installation I change the config an no problem
any idea why ?
