It's very common to believe that slavery is a thing of the past, but research proves (depending on where you look) that while slavery may not be so noticeable today, it certainly isn't gone. There's an article/interview posted over at AlterNet which interviews Benjamin Skinner, a man who spent four years immersed in slavery and the slave trade, and all of what he found is truly depressing.
Slave traders value human life not at all, and to prove it, would you believe that Benjamin at one point was offered a woman with noticeable down syndrome in exchange for his car? He was also offered things like young girls for personal services / sexual favors for $50. Truly, and utterly, disgusting. You might also be surprised to know that the best way to end slavery is to not spend millions of dollars to free a bunch of people, and the reasons are listed inside.
Very informative, and awakening article.
