This caught my attention, originally posted in the TKC forums:

I was looking at Hard Drive prices 2 weeks ago and I was like "What?....These prices cannot be right..Some drives have more then tripled their original price.." Until I came across this article: http://semiaccurate.com/2011/11/03/western-digital-and-samsung-suspend-disk-drive-shipments/

Just in case anyone else was wondering, I thought that I'd post this. Hopefully they came find some parts because these prices are ridiculous.

Look at this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5758911&Sku=TSD-2000EARS
WD 2TB Green was $60, now its $250
and this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7281716&Sku=TSD-500AAKX
WD 500GB Blue was $40, now its $110

WTF.

Last weeks news, they already speculated on march being the supply recovery date.

Makes me want to spend the money on an SSD instead and suck up the lack of space elsewhere.

Retail stores didn't take an immediate hit if you need a drive check best buy and other places. They will go up very soon if they haven't. Saw a 1TB for 66 bucks 2 days ago.

It's looking like we haven't even seen the real effects yet.

Apparently manufacturers are turning to the gray market and paying over price just to stock up inventories. http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20111104PD207.html

They also mention Samsung has stopped shipping HDDs. This means every single HDD maker has stopped, suspended, or decreased overall production at this point.

The mention of Nidec taking two years before they can begin producing HDD motors is appalling... if too many alternate suppliers are in the same boat, this could become a protracted issue and take more than a year for the markets to recover from.

Tech Report has a good chart up as well: http://techreport.com/discussions.x/21956

Edit: I guess even ebay prices are catching up. Just look at those prices climb! That's a 50% increase right there. I think it's time I cleared out those brand new HDDs in my back room just laying around...

This is just stupidly insane, I went to microcenter the other day and WOW did they have tons of drive, however they had a sign up saying "due to the flooding please limit hdd purchases to 1 per person" but the shelves were STOCKED and I mean it, they went like all the way back and stuff yet their prices hadn't gone up as of a few days back.
