Has OCZ Sold PC Power & Cooling?

Earlier this week, a rumor surfaced online that claimed that OCZ Technology was trying to sell PC Power & Cooling, a company that it acquired three years ago. German tech site Planet 3DNow! yesterday made the rumor even more interesting by coming right out and claiming that OCZ has sold off PCP&C. As of today, OCZ still hasn't verified the rumor, but its employees on various Web forums have given clear denials.

The biggest argument I've seen around the Web about this is that OCZ simply hasn't done much with the PC Power & Cooling brand, and as it appears on the outside, nothing at all has changed since the acquisition took place. That of course isn't a bad thing as long as there's been no drop in revenue, but usually an acquisition takes place when the company has specific ideas of where to take things.

I'll bite on this one. The founder for PC Power & Cooling agreed to the initial purchase by OCZ because he got to run his company the same way he always had, for the most part. Doug Dodson put his principles above profit, and that's how he's always run his company.

I'm not privy to the details of their acquisition but OCZ knew they couldn't fold PCP&C into OCZ, nor could they start cutting corners in the design and construction phases of its products. I'd be willing to bet Dodson made sure just because OCZ took ownership that things or quality wouldn't eventually be compromised. PCP&R updates their models surprisingly frequently to keep them current, but they don't actually say anything about it and so they have always seemed to never release much in the way of products.

I will agree OCZ has seemed to been paring back their own branded PSU's, but again many were never popular units with the exception of the GameXstream line... OCZ does seem to have a new Z-series line, I'm not sure when that actually came out.

You're right about the agreement Dodson had with OCZ, but I'm wondering if the payoff just isn't as great as OCZ expected back in the beginning. It would seem strange for any sort of decline, because as far as I'm aware, PCP&C is still one of the premier PSU manufacturers, and I still see their advertisements all over the place.

If there was one company to shed, I almost would have imagined it to be Hypersonic, not PCP&C. Ever since Hypersonic was acquired, we've hardly heard a peep out of them, and the only time I ever do hear about them is at trade shows, when talking to OCZ.

OCZ's Alex Mei contacted us to say that the rumor is absolutely false. A quick quote from our updated news post:

"OCZ's Executive VP and CMO Alex Mei contacted us to let us know that the rumor of a sale is false, and that all is well with PC Power & Cooling. Alex also mentioned that PCP&C even has a new model en route next month, the Silencer MKII. At this point, OCZ is uncertain where the rumor began, but it's nice to hear that it's false!"

Are you serious? Wow, I never even heard that before... I had no idea OCZ bought Hypersonic. I can't fathom why they would, because if I recall correctly they sold their own units long before that purchase. It makes zero sense to me why they would own a budget PSU brand, sell a WIDE range of their own branded PSUs, and also sell the best of the best. They must really see potential in the power supply market.

At any rate, it's good to hear from them that the rumor was false. I am amused they are releasing a Mark II Silencer... It must include that new 8-pin PCIe 3.0 power connector. :)

You must be thinking of a different company... Hypersonic sells PC's and notebooks, not power supplies.

I was going to link to the website, but it looks like my prediction came true. It looks like Hypersonic is no more:
