Good Old Games shuts it's doors

It's widely speculated that this is nothing more than a marketing ploy, because they released a video that hardly looks like a "shutting down" video. Some thing that this is how they chose to come out of "beta", but if so, it's the stupidest marketing ploy ever.

But I can't help but want it to be true.

Just got this e-mail from them... it's seeming like more and more of a joke to me.

We'd like to invite you to a GOG.com online press conference concerning recent events, which will take place on Wednesday, September 22 at 12 p.m. EDT (6 p.m. CET) at http://www.transmisjeonline.pl/gogconference

Flash Player 9 or above required to take part in the conference.

Thanks for being with us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDRvuKjissQ

Dicks. While I hope they come back online soon, this seems like a childish way to garner attention. Though I guess the saying goes, there's no such thing as bad press.

Either way, I have thrown quite a few dollars there way for games. Losing the service that they provide sucks.

They're probably going for a rebrand and some new updates to the software... so rather than state that they are taking the site down for maintenance and surprise everyone, they're pulling a very badly done stunt, sure, people are talking about it but damn, this is silly...

It's true that there's no such thing as "bad press", but this is just absurd. On one hand, I like the fact that the service might not be dead, but on the other, I don't think customers like to be screwed around with. It's not like this was a free service - it's one that a lot of people sunk a lot of cash into, so to just be told that it's gone and then resurface a couple of days later... not the best of ideas.

I still hope it lives on, because I still like the service, but man, what a stupid move if this proves to be nothing more than some elaborate marketing ploy. Even if they simply removed their "Beta" tag, that would have made headlines all over.
