The One, The Only...
So... Tonight I brought myself to making a Fileplanet acct.
Was it a premium? No.
Why did I do it? Been seeing a lot of Fury ads... wanted to check out the beta.
Is the use of fileplanet gay? Kinda...
While I don't feel "Dirty" (http://forums.techgage.com/showthread.php?t=2023) about this I do feel like I am being forced to do something that is not necessary in this day in age, and like I am being gimped because I do not feel like paying.
Lets review the fileplanet method of getting money from people.
Step1: Get exclusive content.
Host a file from a company that exclusively uses you and you alone. Sure there are dozens of free file hosting sites these days, some even who offer cheap packages for both the avg joe and companies to pay for great file hosting, but gaming companies for the most part want to save some $ apparently and make us pay a place like fileplanet to download a "free" beta or some bit of software... It is true that I can get this Beta without subscribing but we shall see later how this works.
Step2: Make sure you can charge for most of it.
Some of this stuff is only available to subscribers... I hope the developers are getting a cut out of this and that the cut is reducing the price I have to pay for the video game itself. Who am I #$%@ing kidding? It's not. Somethings, like this Beta, are free though.
Step3: Make the freeloaders feel like paying.
Sure... It is good marketing to push for people to pay... And I've seen some hosts hide the free download link quite well, and while fileplanet isn't as bad as all that, they do hound you to pay at every turn. When you try to download something free you are told that all of their servers are full and that only premium, or regular subscribers can skip a "line" to download the content. They make sure you know it is not to late to pay now and be a higher class Internet user though. I clicked the free download server and was entered into a queue that gave me both a "place in line" and an estimated time for my download to start...
Surprisingly the estimated time was in a nearly direct proportion to my place in line. And since when were estimates so down to the minute correct? Beginning estimated time: 15min, the time it took for my download to start: 15 min. Has fileplanet developed a way to tell the future of the Internet and when downloads will actually be completed? Or were they just trying to push me paying? If the first is true, they deserve to be paid.
StepWTFeverBYnow: Make sure they cant copy the link for download for use in a download manager.
How many ppl use a Download manager these days? Iunno, and I don't feel like researching how many times such and such + this and that has been downloaded, but I sure am glad that this download (which is happening at this very moment while I'm writing this post, the the other posts I've made tonight) hasn't quit on me like so many large file downloads can.
I am going to end the steps not because they were really just a way to organize the post to begin with and I feel we are beyond that point now.
Some free MMO's that Ive been playing recently seem to understand that these free file hosting sites are a great idea. (You can use download managers with most of them) Some of them even go so far as to have the client downloads come in torrent form. You know... Torrents... Those things that would have made this download free, easy to access, and I wouldn't have to worry about if the download breaks. But I suppose the idea here with fileplanet is that I am supposed to be elite on the Internet enough to pay them, but not enough to know what a torrent is. (the same mentality applies to the dev's)
A 2.3 gig download is idea for a torrent. (Pop Quiz: Guess how big the Fury download is and win an E-Cookie! @@@) Cookie not edible.
I've written this, and other posts all while waiting for the download to finish. It is at 86%, and I am confident now I suppose that it will finish. (why isn't this file zipped?)
