Dual Gigabit Ethernet LAN with Teaming functionality. Does it really work?

I have been reading about a couple of various motherboards that employ Dual Gigabit Ethernet LAN with Teaming functionality. I believe the evga 680i SLI and the Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 have this. From what I understand if you connect two ethernet cables to it from your router, it will double your bandwidth ( or is it two separate networks)? Is this correct? Does it really work? I have a 1MB down DSL, and i wondered if this would be beneficial to me. Would it be good for gaming?

Does the Asus Maximus Extreme have teaming functionality? I really like that board. Thanks.
