DigitalLife 2007: Gateway Unveils The "One"

After months of speculation, Gateway finally unveiled their One "all-in-one" PC. Once out of the box, all that's required to get up and running is a single power cord. We had an opportunity to take a good look at the machine today and relay our thoughts here.

You can read the full article here and discuss it here.

Pretty solid looking PC. To bad it ships with Vista though, XP Media Center Edition might have been a wiser choice IMHO. Or at least the option to pick your OS.

Gateway One

I love how the Gateway One is so much more serviceable then the iMac, but apart from that, the iMac 24 inch, 2.8 ghz machine is the better deal for several reasons. One: The high-end iMac is the same as the high-end Gateway One in price, has a faster cpu; bigger screen; 500 gigabyte to 1 terabyte hard drive; runs more software!

With the iMac and the Extreme Airport modem, you only need one power cord, like the Gateway, as your printer, internet, etc. are wirelessly sent through the Airport Extreme modem. Of course, you also need a wireless keyboard and mouse, be it Apple's or another manufacturers. I love the new iMac keyboard. Big surprise.... I thought I would hate it. The iMac mouse is ok, but I prefer a Logitec or Microsoft, etc. mouse any day of the week.

The Gateway One, the first time I saw it, I thought was a new 'black' model of the iMac. Its a great looking machine, but seriously, the design goes back to the iMac G5, which predates it by several years back. Two-and-half years, I believe?

The biggest problem with the Gateway One is that it only comes with Vista. The iMac comes with OS X and soon Leopard. Leopard is one of only several OS's that have been certified with the 100% Unix 3 classification. I like that... I like that a lot, besides the fact that OS X is so Linux like in nature!

Besides OS X, the iMac can also run any flavor of Linux, the close cousin of OS X, and, not to mention, of course, it can also run Vista (any flavor) and XP (any flavor). With Leopard the iMac is both, at the same time, a 64-bit machine and a 64-bite OS that can run 32-bit programs natively, at native speeds.

All-in-all, nice job Gateway, but, I hate to say it, but I will anyway, as I have seen this basic computer already for the past two years plus.

I am unsure why you constantly compare new products to anything Apple makes. The One is not a Mac competitor directly. You consider the fact that it runs Vista instead of Mac OS X as a downside... but what do you expect? Is Gateway supposed to emulate OS X on the One to please you?

Seriously... it's hard to believe that you are not biased when you go to such lengths to explain why it is Macs are better. If you still believe OS X runs more software than Windows, you've never used Windows before :)

As for the overall design, it's not much of a surprise that it's similar to the iMac. I think more people would have questioned any other design they would have chose if they had to deliberately make it look completely different.

Something like one of these would make for a great little upstairs (livingroom) computer, but the screen is a bit to small for my liking and the price could be a lot better. But seeing as I haven't priced anything like this before, I guess I'd better shop around before I judge the price to harshly..................;)

Lets do some simple 1+1=2 math, ok?

Just the facts please! I never, ever stated that OS X ran more software. I said that the iMac ran more software.

Simply ask yourself some questions and lets do some simple 1+1= 2 math, shall we?

One: What machine can run more software: A) A machine that can only run two of three major OS's - Window and Linux, or two: B) A machine that can run all Window software; all Linux software and last, on top of all that, a machine that can run all of the tens of thousands of unique OS X software, including free-ware and commercial apps?

Two: Which computer, for around the exact same price is a better deal: A machine with a 2.0 Core Dual CPU or a machine with a 2.8 Core Dual CPU; a machine with a 19 inch screen or a machine with a high-resolution glossy 24 inch screen; a machine with up to a 500 gigabyte drive or a machine with up to a terabyte drive; etc. I could go on, but really, 1+1 always ends up = 2 in the end, or does it not?

The Gateway One is a really nice looking machine, maybe just as nice as the iMac (but I don't think so, but hey..... I'm bias for putting 1+1 together). The Gateway has some features that I wish the iMac had and vice versa. Steve Jobs, two months ago, said that Apple will be releasing "killer iMacs" at the next Mac World in New York, this coming January. Well, considering how great the iMac is now, I can't wait!

I don't know if you ever heard of Chris Pirillo, one of the most respected Window experts out there, but as far as Vista goes.... well, you can watch and listen to what he thinks about that on the link below. Its about three minutes long.

The Gateway One is a great machine, but it still looks like a black iMac ( the iMac has an adjustable screen ) which goes back almost three years. Maybe I'm crazy, but somehow I think that Gateway knew about what Apple has been doing these past few years. Apple is now, financially, bigger than HP and about twice the size of Dell. Apple is not some little mom & pop outfit and I'm not bias because I like to point out the advantages of the Apple hardware/ software combination, no more than you are bias when you always tell me that Sabayon is better than Ubuntu. I will take your word on that, as I only ever really used the latter, so I can't really say that it is better then something I never used before like the former Linux distro. But, no doubts, I will soon be running Sabayon on my iMac, natively, at full speed, just like any other Intel machine. :O)

So, Rob, if your still in New York check out the Big Apple's newest tourist attraction - the 24 hour Fifth Avenue Apple store; maybe, when you walk out of there, you won't be too harsh on me the way I'm not too harsh on you for pointing out the advantages of Sabayon over Unbuntu?

I don't need to do a 1+1. We are not likely going to agree on anything. You confide in people who I consider to be severely overrated journalists (Mossberg, Pirillo), so we are not bound to ever agree. I don't think a scale goes low enough to accurately show how much I care about what those two say when it comes to a Mac or a PC.

PCs are not Macs and Macs are not PCs. Why a debate needs to be started everytime I post something that somewhat resembles an Apple product, I have no idea. But you sure are one dedicated Apple marketing guru.

As for the Apple store on 5th Ave, I was planning to go there for weeks but decided against it now that I am here. I know if I go in there and purchase something, I am going to regret it later. Apple and I are on a love/hate relationship. Just when I am starting to have my interest piqued by their products, they do something ridiculous that makes me hate them again (Linux support / new iPods with stupid issues). I wanted an iPod for website purposes, but I am still undecided on the issue, especially considering the new interface is getting a lot of flack for being slow and cumbersome.

Dear Mr. Williams: If a Mac isn't a PC, praytell, what is it? A toaster? Some one sounds a little bias here. As a neighbor (Ft. Lee, N.J.) I often visit the Apple store. Free internet, helpful staff and great products. Its highly recommend regardless of your choice of PC. Why would you cancel something that you planned for weeks because of something, somebody else commented on? (I noticed you both have the same last names; any relation?)

PS. The 30-inch Gateway monitor post was great, but you said Gateway acquired Acer. I believe its the other way round? Gateway is in trouble the last time I looked, but I could be wrong on that?

As far as the iMac vs Gateway One is concerned, I have seen both. I was at DigitalLife twice this week. You might have seen me... I was the cute Italian with the big muscles! Seriously, I am cute and to be honest, after being in the Apple store many, many times, I will honestly say that after being a Windows user for ever.... (I'm 27 years old, but its seems like forever,) I will be officially going Mac soon. I'm buying the 24 inch iMac on Tuesday.... Oh, God.... I can't wait. I'm not alone as both my brother, sister-in-law and, it seems, half of my friends have already gone Mac.

As for Mossberg and Pirillo, two of the most respected of their kind, it looks, rather unprofessional to trash them the that way you did. Why did you do that, is it because they said something nice about Apple? Doesn't that sound even more bias on your part? You don't compare yourself to a veteran like Mossberg I hope? I don't always agree with the man, but Gosh.... he's been in the business longer than anyone.

Well, got to go, so I will say goodbye to you kind sir and good bye to my 1-year old HP (computer anyway; I'm keeping my HP printer!) Come next Tuesday, this American born and bred and Italian-all-American boy (100 % pure stud!) will be one of the five-million estimated new switchers to the Mac way of life this year alone!

I couldn't be happier too!

Antonio Roca. Ft. Lee, New Jersey (across the river from Manhattan)

PS. I just came across Techgage.com yesterday; its a nice site, but pleassssse, no more silly statements like the Mac isn't a PC, because it is.... its just a better one, and thats coming from a soon-to-be Mac owner and former Windows fanatic. No bias here. Trust me.

Thanks Antonio and welcome to the Mac. Wow, only 27, oh, how I wish I was your age again.

Yes, Rob and I are related. However, I don't think he is as bias as you think? No, he just loves to bug me, his old, old, uncle. But then again, I like to do the same to him. Its a family tradition.... see who can drive the other family member bananas for the chance to win, well.... a banana!

Rob is a great guy and, if he gets the chance, I hope he, like you, gets to visit the Apple Fifth Ave. store as NBC says it has become a tourist attraction in its own right. The Glass canopy, the wonderfully patented stairway.... Wow, if only I had the chance myself to go. I'm just jealous because I'm not able to visit this shrine, like Rob, so I can worship at the feet of the master, Steve Jobs.... ah, what a pity.

Seriously, I don't worship Steve or Apple, but I do like them and I like them a lot. I'm not sure why Rob believes some reports about the iPods being slow and clumsy and not the many more reports that say the opposite? All the more reason I hope he takes the time to visit the shrine, whoops... I mean Apple 5th. Ave. Store and see them for himself. Why just go on what others say when you can examine them yourself?

Again, thanks Antonio, you young whipper-snapper, but you do realize, don't you, that I'm a little jealous that your getting your 24 incher on Tuesday.... I have to wait because I suffer from a terrible condition known as empty pocketitus! Terrible condition, really.

PS -Sorry for calling you Philip, Antonio... I was busy writing to Philip Smith, one of my favorite bloggers at his site: http://jackwhispers.blogspot.com/

At my age I should know better than to try and do two things at once!

Antonio,

If a Mac isn't a PC, praytell, what is it? A toaster?
Before Apples began running Windows, no one considered a Mac to be a PC. The word "PC" was automatically associated with Windows machines, at least with the people I've grown up talking to. When I compare a Mac to a PC, I am referring to the fact that a PC doesn't run Mac OS X. Most people who plan to purchase such a system intend to use Windows... they don't have OS X in mind. The same goes for those who buy Apples... they plan to use OS X more than Windows (at least you'd assume).

Some one sounds a little bias here.
Not bias at all, my friend. I just look at things for what they are. When I post a story and someone comes in to derail it and goes through such lengths to defend Apple, does that not seem bias? For the record, I run Linux 99% of the time at home. I hate Windows Vista and openly admit it.

I believe its the other way round?
You are absolutely right. That's what I get for finishing up an article at 5:00AM. That aside, that monitor is incredible. If you are headed back to DL, be sure to check it out, especially the Bioshock example I mentioned in the article.

As for Mossberg and Pirillo, two of the most respected of their kind, it looks, rather unprofessional to trash them the that way you did.
I don't consider that "trashing", but I apologize is I insulted anyone. Mossberg in general has made me question things lately, and yes it has to do with Apple. Recently he's seem to have gone pro-Apple and in turn, totally against the PC. For example, his recent "findings" of the Apple computer being the only one to score such a high "Windows Experience Rating" is what really made me settle on my conclusions, due to a blatant lack of actual testing/investigating.

His findings were that an Apple PC could hit 4.9, but no PC he tested managed to hit the same mark. I am using a mid-range laptop here, running Vista, and it has a WER of 4.7. The equivelent system in a desktop format would score higher than that, and this is just "mid-range". Regardless, this is all my opinions. If you like Mossberg, there's nothing wrong with that.

Again, I am not biased. As a journalist, I have to make sure I'm not if I plan on running a respected website. Once I get home, I will take a deeper look at the One and the current iMacs and see if I can come up with some better conclusions.

You should sign up for the forums and post around more often. You obviously have too many opinions all bottled up ;-) As for seeing you at the show... I'm unsure since there were so many people around. The only person I can truly remember well is the hefty guy who wore a shirt that read, "I'm In Shape... Round Is a Shape" and also a pin, "I prefer food over my sex life, but now I can't even get into my own pants."

I'm not sure why Rob believes some reports about the iPods being slow and clumsy and not the many more reports that say the opposite?

I have not seen reports of the opposite, but I might check it out myself if I manage to get to an Apple Store. The reports I've seen have tackled the issue of a slow menu which is caused by all of the album art in the background. Then there is the touch, which seems to have odd issues itself. I'm half-tempted to pick that one up, if only to prove I am not anti-Apple. But that said, I will likely wait until I get back home, being that it's in a different Country.

iMac & Gateway One, steals design from 10-year old computer!

Wow, like I just came across the link below and was amazed that neither the current iMac or Gateway One's basic design is original! That's right, as you can see from the enclosed pic on the below link, the basic design is from another computer that goes all the way back to 1997! Thats a whopping decade!

So there you guys, stop the fuming.

Who's trashing your article? Not me!

Antonio,

Before Apples began running Windows, no one considered a Mac to be a PC. The word "PC" was automatically associated with Windows machines, at least with the people I've grown up talking to. When I compare a Mac to a PC, I am referring to the fact that a PC doesn't run Mac OS X. Most people who plan to purchase such a system intend to use Windows... they don't have OS X in mind. The same goes for those who buy Apples... they plan to use OS X more than Windows (at least you'd assume).......

Rob you are wrong in suggesting that I'm thrashing your article; it was a great article, nothing wrong with it. I was simply stating that I thought the machine looked too much like the iMac, that there was no way someone could say it was not inspired, in some way, by the iMac and two, that a faster cpu, bigger hard drive, and bigger screen, at the same price, is a still a better deal. 'You don't have to add things up' sounds like you are not even listening, no wonder you can't agree.

Even if I attacked the Gateway One, why would you consider that of me attacking your article? I think it is the best PC in its class and, as I also mentioned, the user upgradability and power brick are superior to the iMac, or did you not notice?

And why wait till you get home to look at the iPods, etc. Why not, since your not in the Big Apple every day, hop in and talk to the Apple experts (Genius Bar) and ask first-hand about all your concerns and try out what every you like, as much as you like? Wouldn't Apple trained people be the ones to consult. I wouldn't go to Microsoft for Apple advice or vice versa. Why should you? Get both sides of the story. If someone question me, like you think I'm doing, I be hoping mad and find out one way or the other.

You saw the Gateway ONE, now, I ask, Why not go play with the 24 inch iMac, which is about the same price as the high-end One. Are afraid that you might like it, or what? What are you afraid of? Seems like a fair question to me. You love to review PC hardware, why not, if you got the chance, kill two birds with one stone? Give yourself some reason to come back and bite me!

I like to see you review some Apple hardware and software, because, even as I told Antonio (sorry, about the name mix up... so embarrasing!) I don't think your bias, but sometimes I have to wonder? You take time for the hardware at DigitalLife, but won't even bother to spend a half hour for a quick peek at Apple's after you think I trashed your One article. You paid out big bucks to review the likes of Gateways One, why not take the chance, for FREE, to learn first hand why I and miilions and millions of switchers to the Mac are so big on Apple products?

At least, Antonio saw both the iMac and the One, he can judge better than you or I; I seen and played with the new iMac, but not the ONE; you seen and played with the ONE, but not the iMac 24 inch. Why not arm yourself with more knowledge to share with your readers? See if I'm right or if I am wrong about the 24 inch being the better deal? Whether you like or hate Apple, the Mac and OS X are growing like crazy in the market place. What you and I think won't change that one little bit.

Oh, by the way, Mossberg was misquoted, he actually said that the iMac was one of the highest scoring Vista computers that he has used; he didn't say or meant to imply that it was the absolute highest scoring computer. Read his opinion on the new iPod Touch, and tell me if he is in Apple's pocket? No, that man is the most influential tech journalist out there. Wall Street listens to him as much as anyone, so that says a lot. If for only his age, the man should be respected. Besides, isn't he allowed to make a mistake; even if he said the Mac had 50% of the market, would that make every other thing he said automatically wrong too? If you make one or two mistakes, or I, or anyone else, is all lost because you, me or they make a few mistakes.?

Really, one way or the other, the consumer will decide the winner. Too bad you didn't seem bias or you would watch Chris Pirillo's short video. But sadly, I'm the one who mentioned it, so that seems to be reason enough to automatically not to watch it, I guess?

By the way, I just noticed someone posted a pic of a link to the old 10 year old computer. I forgot all about that one. Thanks, that brings back memories.

So, in the end, my nephew, get back from NYC safely. I don't want any thing bad to happen to you in the Big Apple, I would miss sparing with you... you are smart, very smart and regardless of our different opinions, I can learn a lot from you. You make me think and I likewise, hope I do the same for you?

Lets just be glad where only uncle and nephew... imagine if we were husband and wife? Divorce city, here we come!

Cnet and Computershoper reviews Gateway One

Jolly good chaps. Hi, today is the very first time I logged onto Tecgage.com by sheer accident. Man, I love the way this Rob guy and his uncle goes on and on. We love this kind of thing here in the south of England. Its got me thinking, so I did a little Googling and I found two reviews and it appears apart from the striking appearance, the iMac blows the Gateway machine out of the water.

According to Cnet, " The bottom line: The Gateway One desktop computer introduces a few cool design improvements to the all-in-one desktop concept, but it loses major points in performance and overall value. We'd recommend the faster, more affordable iMac instead, unless you have a serious aversion to the Mac OS and aren't inclined to use Boot Camp." ( http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/gateway-one/4505-3118_7-32627127.html )

According to Computershopper review, "Look at any sleekly designed all-in-one today, and four letters spring instantly, unavoidably to mind: iMac. Apple's ultra-slick, ultra-friendly integrated desktop dominates the market for this kind of PC right now, and while we do like Gateway's latest foray into the all-in-one category, the Gateway One, we're not sure it will stem Apple's sales momentum anytime soon." ( http://computershopper.com/reviews/gateway-one-desktop-review )

Interesting to note, my old girlfriend is thinking of buying the new white 'MacBook' and I too, I must admit, have thought of the idea of getting myself a desktop, after seeing the smaller iMac bout ten days ago in a dress shop in London. The screen was so fabulous my eyes almost popped out!

I had a Gateway about two years ago and it was absolute crap. Blokes, I hope the new Gateway is better than my cheap shit-box was? I am currently using a two-year old Dell that I bought off me best mate.... not a bad machine, but compared to the smaller iMac that we saw, I am no longer so happy with it.

After reading both the pieces from CNET and Computershoper, I have to argue that the older and most experienced chap made the better argument. But what would I know, I'm just a meat-cutter.

Any way chaps, keep giving us, what seems to Chesley and I, two strongly opinionated blokes, battling back and forth, with some various good points from the both of you. You could, I suggest: Have a regular Battle of Opinions section, one bloke arguing this while the other bloke tries argues the other way with a different view of the same subject! Made me Google up both the iMac and the Gateway One. Good show chaps.

The One, The Only...
In the end, certain OS's will be better than others in certain areas. Not one is entirely "perfect".

Once you take that out of the argument...

I like PC's. No... not HP's... Personal Computers. I do not think i have ever liked an "HP" product.

To all in favor of a MAC: You are comparing prebuilt systems with prebuilt systems on a site that mainly probably has modified prebuilt systems and custom builds. Change what you are comparing it to if you are going to make the assertion mac > pc. If you are making the claim that G1 < iMac... I slightly agree with you. But only because of technical specs / $. Other than that, I am not too into Apple at all for various reasons.

To all in favor of a PC: Im with you. But there are certainly things a mac is better with... For those saying the G1 is better than the iMac... I like gateway products sometimes. I would have to know more about it to claim so, other than the PC > Mac knowledge that I have.

To Rob: Yes... PC = just about anything Non MAC in hardware terms.

To Antonio Roca: I would base those reporters Biases on how balanced they are when it comes to the semantical words that they use for both reporting the good and bads news of Apple. Do the write more on pros? or cons?

I think... **** it, I don't trust ppl like that.

Rob is not like that because he does try to like something. Sometimes multiple times. (that make him homo AHAHAHA j/k rob) Seriously... he tries to give mac a fair shake. I think he secretly wants Apple to do well and have a larger martket share... He just gets pissed when they screw things up.

The Gateway One is a great little computer.

When it comes to computers, be they Macs, PCs, or whatever, they all have their good points and their bad. I love some things about the Mac, and hate others things about it. Same goes for Windows and Linux machines.

I prefer the Mac, but seriously, I like the PC, it has a lot to offer. Likewise for Linux. I may prefer the Mac the way I prefer a Mercedes over a BMW, but that doesn't make the BMW, or for that matter Fords and Chevy's, bad products either.

As far as Rob goes, he just loves technology... period! As for me I'm the same. I prefer roast beef on my plate most of the time, but still, I love chicken and turkey (my friends say I'm the later!) and salmon. Same with computers. I like them all. I just prefer the Mac. I have nothing against non-Mac systems.

As the guy from England pointed out, several major publications are putting the iMac ahead in performance and value, but if you prefer the G-One, no problem. As long as you are happy with it, fine. If I was rich I buy one for myself. I love how you can easily add a second drive and the brick is cool. I would love to see it myself though. Hopefully, soon?

As far as the English guy suggestion for a type of 'Prize Fight' feature... forget it! At least with me in it anyway. I have enough on my plate and Rob even more. You have to be tuff to do all that Rob has to do. I don't know how he manages. I think I would go crazy! Well, I'm already that, so I guess I should say, I'd go crazier!

I'm amazed at all the responses to this post. Never expected it. Got to be good for business, I'd think?

I do hope Rob changes his mind and visits the Fifth Ave. store, but more so, that he returns home safely. I will feel a lot better knowing he is home safe and sound. After all, I'm his uncle.... its my job.
