For as long as MMOs have existed, so has the sale of in-game currency for real-life cash. Rarely, the developer will allow such dealings to go on, and when it does, it's usually managed through a sanctioned service (think Blizzard's auction house for Diablo III). But when the need arises where you have to keep things out of the game, sometimes real-life dealings are your only option - and as we've heard many times in the news before, sometimes these dealings go awry.
