CompUSA Back From the Dead with 15 Re-Opened Stores

From our front-page news:
Last December, we first learned that CompUSA was closing up shop, but that didn't last too long. Less than a month later, we learned that Systemax, the parent company of Tiger Direct, purchased all assets and planned to re-open a few of the stores. Less than four months after the acquisition, 15 stores have been re-opened.

It seems Systemax wants to start out slow to see how things progress, because the only locations open right now are available in Florida, Texas and a single location in Puerto Rico. From comments at Engadget, it seems the insides are similar to Tiger Direct's retail outlets. Going to CompUSA.com shows similar traits to TD also though, such as the identical Favicon to Tiger Direct's own site and also similar fonts in their banners.

I know many people who enjoyed shopping at CompUSA, so hopefully the revised version doesn't lack what made the old one worthwhile. It's going to be interesting to see if Systemax can keep these stores on their feet, but things look to be off on a good foot.

We're not sure why the Sunshine State faces the brunt of CompUSA's angry zombie wrath -- do retirees enjoy being ripped off?* -- but Texans and Puerto Ricans can join in the fun with four stores of their very own.

Tiger Direct holds the same event with the same name at CES. Go figure ;-)

Good luck on that man... though you might not need it!

Wow, they kept the one in El Paso Tx... makes sense I guess, I don't think there is a competitor within 600 miles. :D Their website no longer seems to work properly with Opera, yay. One more reason for me to avoid them again. :)

Would give anything for Fry's to open up a shop here, closest one is an hour's drive north.

San Antonio, closest Fry's is an hour's drive north in Austin. Was fine when gas prices were dirt cheap, but now it'll run $42 to filll my car, and takes half a tank roundtrip. Used to be a single CompUSA in town, but prices were as much as half-again elsewhere.

They also have a very very nice Frys located over around Nasa Blvd in Houston, but beggars can't be choosers... ;) I got to manhandle an ASUS Maximus Extreme motherboard they'd not yet mounted to their motherboard wall... don't think they had the Cosmos case though, but they had just about all of the rest on display that you can open up and play with.

The One, The Only...
I stopped going to fry's as soon as they started charging just as much for a vid card as best buy did.

Actually... when I was looking for a 7800gt they were slightly more expensive.

Can't expect Fry's to be cheaper for everything. ;)

Their loss leader sales are simply crazy... just after the Q6600 got price slashed from $533 to $266, they had a sale with them for $200 with a free ECS motherboard. For things like paste, misc hardware, and motherboards they can be competitive. Certainly things that cost a good bit on shipping such as cases, they are often better.
