Battlefield 4 Trailer. Too soon?

Brilliant video, indeed! Gave me goosebumps.

That said, I must confess I will never be cheering for a game like that. Games, to work for me, will always have to steer away from a photo-realistic look. I need to have a sense of palpable fantasy. Current 3D technologies (and upcoming ones for sure) do a beautiful job emulating reality and turning it into a (often) much more interesting fantasy world. A barren landscape constructed out of polygons, textures and shaders can look absolutely gorgeous on our screen and inspire our imagination. The real landscape that served as the basis for that, is however pretty much boring to look at if captured on video.

However, I'm sure a point needs to be made that war games do benefit indeed from a realistic look. It's just that, if that ever happens in a time I'm still an active gamer, I'll probably lose my interest entirely.
