DeviceVM's Splashtop embedded Linux environment looks to be sticking around a while, thanks to ASUS' decision to make the technology available on all of their upcoming motherboards. To find out what's new, we are taking a look at the latest version, as seen on the upcoming P5Q Deluxe.

DeviceVM

DeviceVM is going to be the biggest threat Microsoft ever face.
If DeviceVM does not charges too much for Splashtop to motherboard manufacturers,
We will see Linux in every computer by the end of this decade.
5,10,15,20% or more of those computers will never need another OS (Windows).
I would not be surprised if MS buy DeviceVM or any companies attemp to make something like
Splashtop then kill it.

Well, what you should understand is that Splashtop is -not- a regular OS. It's a minimalistic environment that's set out to accomplish very basic tasks. There is no way to install new apps, or modify the OS whatsoever, so it's really impossible to tell it's even Linux.

In the future, flash memory might become so dirt cheap that DeviceVM could add the ability to install apps, or include more in general, but I still don't see it becoming a threat to Microsoft anytime soon. For that to happen, the flash chip on the board would have to be large, and that's unlikely to happen for a while (due to cost and practicality).
