    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

Sorry that was more for Hawke, I had just pulled the NorthBridge Heatinsink off, cleaned it and applied ArticSilver when I got the 97C reading (forgot to plug in the fan). I should have clarified; the NB may be remote 1, I am not at the office to check but whichever it is the SB is always 40C or...

Are there two Remote 2's showing in SpeedFan? The lower of the two is the southbridge and the 70-80C reading is the NSB. I just realized that when my Remote 2 was reading 97C; my NSB cooler was unplugged. I plugged the fan in and it dropped 30C.

If you don't have a ramcooler get one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835704001 The FB-Dimms will easily hit 90C+ under load, this ramcooler dropped my temps by 30C.

What kind of overclock are you running? I could run mine on stock settings, but any OC would fail.

Both 0 & 1 have them, the CoolerMaster V8's have a large metal backlate that just crushed both sets of capacitors. I never had a problem with the smaller plastic baclplates. CM has plastic washers you can use instead of the backplate, I put those on the new board and they held fine.

I put my new board together today and it worked fine, those Capacitors were the problem. I was able to boot and run 3DMark06 @ 4.2GHz, I just missed 25,000 3DMarks because my GPU's started to throttle during the last 2 tests. I ordered a longer CrossFire cable so I can space my cards out on the...

Wow Mike, that sucks; it seems no matter what you do to try and cool this board it will find a way to sabotage your efforts. I just found a major flaw using a 775 Heatsink on a 771 socket: Those two SM Capacitors were crushed by my CM V8's metal backplates; which I'm guessing is causing the...

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

I am up and running, I forgot that I had reset the BIOS defaults and C1E & Speedstep were enabled and that was causing the crash. I am currently running @ 3.85GHz; 9.5CPU multiplier x 4.06 FSB on air: Running stable but quirky; BSOD every now and then. I think my board is bad or my new...

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

I got my 2nd QX9775 in the mail yesterday and dropped it into my SkullTrail board with another Cooler Master V8 HSF. I hooked everything up and turned it on; fans spun, lights flickered and it died. I pulled the new HSF off and checked the metal backplate and the insulation was torn allowing 2...

I just got off of the phone with CoolIt and they are hoping to be releasing the replacement for the Pure ST next week. They said it was based of off their Domino line, just an FYI. I am going to have to do something to get my temps down.

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

Now that core i7 has been released I have been able to find new QX9775's for $500 and since I have so much wrapped up in my build already I bought one. My E5420's were running stable @ 3.21GHz but I have been able to push my QX9775 to 3.85GHz and stay stable. I am waiting to catch another one on...

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

That is good news, if I would have known that I probably could have ignored a couple failed blend tests. Here is something else that is odd: I am totally stable @ 3.21GHz but the NorthBridge was still hitting 65C+ so to see if I could cool it down I dropped all the voltages back to default...

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

Thanks Mike! I upgraded to BIOS v1175 and there it was! All speeds are @ 100% and it is running MUCH cooler! Edit: I am running a Prime95 blend test as we speak @ 3.21GHz and no temps have hit 65C! Before turning off the fan speed control all temps would hit 75C+ except the southbridge...

Where is the Fan Speed setting in the Bios? I have checked the manual and every setting in BIOS and can't figure it out.

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

NSB Cooler was junk and I ended up using a CPU fan from an old Pentium 2 on the stock NSB Heatsink and it dropped the temps by 10 degrees. I can't seem to get much over 3.21GHz but it is passing all the stress tests and the temps aren't out of control so I think that is where it will stay...

1.45v for what value? CPU, FSB or MCH? 3.5GHz wouldn't post but my voltages are all still at default. And how do I set my fan speeds to 100%?

Thanks Mike, it was just power management. How high should I take my OC? What about Snoop Filtering, should it be on or off?

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

It passed the blend test again @ 5.5.5.18 and 3.2GHZ; also the System tray and Intel's CPU ID are both showing 3.2 GHZ so I wonder if CPUz is just getting bad readings because with the CPU's at idle it still goes from 6x to 7.5x. Edit: I set everything to default and it is still showing a 6x...

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

Wow thanks for the RAM Cooler info, I got it today and it dropped my FB-DIMM temps by 20°C! I am running a 24 hour blend test to see if this thing can handle 3.2GHz. All the temps are good except for the NSB, once I get that cooler I might try for 3.25GHz and work my way up.

    Building an Affordable "Skulltrail" System

When I try to set the RAM timings to 4.4.4.18 the CPU reverts back to stock speeds, if I change it back to 5.5.5.18 the CPU's will show 3.2 GHz in the system tray. That is not a big deal except when I run CPUz it shows my multipier randomly changing from 6 to 7.5 and back again. The multiplier...
