This story couldn't be more perfect for a Friday. Sophos, a leading anti-virus provider, issued its detection updates as usual yesterday, and while this usually goes off without a hitch, there was a problem with this one. Somehow, the update managed to begin detecting Sophos itself as a virus. Shh/Updater-B, to be exact (I guess we're to keep it quiet?).

Oh no doubt. It's not clear the number of people that were affected, but if most of this was concentrated to the enterprise... that is not going to bode well for Sophos.

At least it's recoverable, unlike certain issues regarding a number of Anti-Virus companies flagging ATAPI.SYS as a virus at the same time... You know, that tiny little protocol responsible for a lot of data transfers on a modern system. Yeah, hundreds, if not thousands of computers turned into bricks that required either an OS re-install or some very selective commands to type if you were fortunate enough to have a recovery disk.
