Crucial 2GB DDR2-1066 Ballistix Tracer

It's not often that Crucial releases a new high-end kit, but they've finally caught up to everyone else and released Ballistix clocked at DDR2-1066. Today we are taking a look at the Tracer version and look to see how far we can push them over stock.

Good looking pair of sticks you got there.

By any chance, did you try to see how high they could go with 2.1v and 5-5-5 timings?

No, sadly. I haven't had as much time as I'd like to tweak deeply lately. Too much content to write and not enough time =/

If I can find time this weekend I will give it a shot.

Having just bought these memory sticks and subsequently installing them, I was made aware that they are being regarded as having an 800MHz bus speed, when they are clearly advertized to have 1066MHz, to the best of my knowledge. I am slightly angered by the discrepancy and what I am beginning to feel is false advertising. How does one get these sticks to their advertized rates?

This is a common misinterpretation. CPU-Z and other CPUID tools will discover the kit as being 400MHz (DDR2-800), because it has to adhere to JEDEC standards (though sometimes companies will go beyond regular spec). The kit is sold as DDR2-1066, however, so it will work as such. You need to configure it in your BIOS appropriately.

If you have a processor with a 1066FSB (if it's new, then chances are you do), then this is made easy. Just go into the BIOS and memory settings and choose the appropriate memory speed from one of the menus, along with choosing the right timings. If you've never overclocked before, it might take a little getting used to. Just make sure you choose 5-5-5-5 (CL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS) for the timings and then DDR2-1066 for the RAM speeds and you should be good to go.
