Wouldn't stuff predating the patent render the patent moot?

I should patent cuckoo clocks since I'm sure there aren't any currently in force. Sure, they've only been making them for 200-300 years but WTF? What've I got to lose, right?

I've got nothing against Apple attempting to patent this at all... really, I don't. I do have a problem with the morons who authorised the patent...

I'm going to go hide in a box now and pretend the world doesn't exist...
