Seeing that the forum is slow lately, I figure we need more interactivity here. To start things off... why not show off your desktop?

Nudity is not permitted

You can use the attachment feature to upload, instead of using some website if you like.

No nudity? Waaaaaaaaaaaa....oh, wait....my current (underline current) desktop features no nudity.

What about partial nudity?

Hot time!

I usually mix it up every month or so with some new abstract art from DevArt. I'm looking at maybe getting StylesXP. There are some awesome transitions you can make with it. ON WITH THE TOPIC!

The wallpaper color kinda fits the visual theme so I just stuck with it. There are alot of wallpapers that have the "Vista" label on them. There are even visual themes to make XP look like vista.

What is it with you people and Internet Explorer icons :-(

werty316
08-26-2006, 04:12 PM
I prefer to have the desktop with as little icons as possible. What you see in the post is what it is with very little icons to cluttered things.

Rob Williams
08-26-2006, 04:12 PM
I meant the fact of even remotely considering clicking on that dreaded icon!! Unless it's 7.0... then it's a tad better.

madmat

I keep IE around for pages that just absolutely refuse to work with Firefox and I need to access them. Since I removed all other access to IE I had to put an icon on the desktop.

Rob Williams
08-26-2006, 04:28 PM
In that rare occurrance, it would be pay off to just type 'iexplore' in the run line. But... I'm dirty like that. BTW... whenever you run into a site that doesn't work in FF... let me know. I haven't found one for a while.

madmat
08-26-2006, 04:30 PM
I find them on rare occasion but then again, I tend to hang around the seedier side of the internet.

Rob Williams
08-26-2006, 04:31 PM
Oh, pron sites. I getcha. ;-)

The only site I have ever found to not work in Firefox properly was Microbeta.net, but I think it's been since fixed. Not going to try now since I don't feel like Firefox crashing if it wasn't, heh.

I recently got Style XP and like it A LOT. Here's my current theme/background.
http://xs105.xs.to/xs105/06351/bckgrd.JPG.xs.jpg (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs105&d=06351&f=bckgrd.JPG)

As for pages not working in FF, I found an extension that works perfectly. It's called <a href= "https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419">IE Tab</a>. Just click the Firefox icon at the bottom right of the page and it'll automatically reopen the page in an IE tab. I keep the IE icon for the rare case I want to goto a website directly and it work.

Yes, I'm on XP and I'm using Litestep. I'm using a slightly different theme/bar/VWM now though. I need to get a pic of the change, but it's not that significant. I still have the same background image.

@Madstork: I dont remember which one is in that image I posted, but my current one is an OTS2 Bar, Vitreolus [sic]. Are you using the wallpaper changer from litestep? There's a plugin for that. You know you can mod in whatever plugin you want from shellfront.org right? My favorite bar style no longer works in the new build but I have it in my archives. I might go back and edit it up to fix the bugs. It was more in-line with the Tron theme I have going (had blue glowy lines and stuff).

Most times I love to deck out my desktop with cool OSX Tiger themes, but for some reason lately I simply prefer the simplicity of the simple desktop. Main desktop is Tiger 4.9 and just loving it.

Psst.... Check out the Uxtheme Multi-patcher (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/UXTheme-MultiPatcher.shtml). Then find and apply .msstyle files (http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/skins/windows/visualstyle/?order=9&alltime=yes) manually. It's not a dual-boot. Check here (http://www.apple.com/getamac/windows.html).
“You can run any combination of Mac and Windows programs at the same time, on the same screen.”

MacMan

It's not a dual-boot. Check here (http://www.apple.com/getamac/windows.html).

Sorry, even though Window expert, Scot Finnie, indeed talks about running Window's via VMWare or Parallels Desktop for Mac, Apple, itself, also provides a beta program for duel booting, called BOOT CAMP, which will be a standard feature in the up-coming release of the 64-bit, Hyper-Treaded, Leopard OS.

As a Mac user for the past ten-million years, eight-months, four-weeks, 5 days, six-hours, ten-minutes and thirty-five seconds, I can assure you it is a very real dual booting system. The only let down is that you have to reboot from OSX and vice-versa, which is not necessary when using Parallels or VMWare. :)

VMWare provides gaming support, Parallel doesn't, but promises to in the near future.

Recently, I have been trying to keep a nice, tidy and clean desktop, because I read that a cluttered desktop can cause a performance hit on a computer.

Is it true that a clutter desktop, in fact, can slow down your computers performance? And, if so, just how much of a latency hit can it produce?

According to an article I recently read, but hell if I can remember where, stated that each and every icon, folder or other piece of crap on your desktop uses memory, etc. and can, if your desktop is really cluttered like my desktop, can induce a significant slow down! Question: IS THAT TRUE?

To be on the safe side, I am going to try and keep my desktops as simple as can be, like this recent shot.

DarkSynergy
05-19-2007, 03:43 PM
Aside from the theme, I love your desktop organization. I am the same way in a sense. I have everything down below in my quick start bar and virtually nothing on the desktop. I however enjoy a straight black background over any pictures.

I dont know if I buy that. If thats the case, then everything in the start menu would slow the system down since, like the desktop icons, the start menu is just made up of shortcuts. I just don't know if I can jump on board with that theory. If it is actually true though, I think I could live with the performance hit as I do not want to follow the entire file path to each and every program installed on my PC.

Rob Williams
05-19-2007, 03:57 PM
Yes a lot of icons will cause increased latency. This was more of a problem with older computers though (>2000). If you pile up your desktop with a bunch of hi-res icons, it could be a noticeable performance hit. If you don't feel one, then it's not a problem.

W00T, I want this car.

Is that a production model? I know I've seen rally cars similar to that, but nothing for sale. Looks sharp.

I have no idea if it is a production model I found it online. It is a Subaru Impreza wrx.

Here is my desktop:

I shamelessly copied this idea from this Wiki page (http://en.opensuse.org/Projects/KNetworkManager) where I saw a screen shot of a similar setup.

I'm using a custom cursor from here (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Neutral?content=28310).
I'm also using Tahoma for all my fonts.

Running KDE 3.5.6 with the Plastik theme.

Nice setup Ben. I see you have an Xfce kind of look going on with your KDE. I tried Tahoma and couldn't get into it.. I just like smooth fonts too much. Updated my desktop... mainly icon differences. It's hard to look at the same icons for months.

Cool, clean wallpaper ccdarkness, I like it. Stork, if your PC suddenly dies, I'll assume it's because of lack of breathing room ;-)
