The most expensive piece of hardware that I own is my LCD 19" monitor at $300. Price on it has gone down now. However, it was $300 when I purchased it originally. Everything else in my machine costs less then the LCD monitor.
Everyone post in this thread their most expensive piece of hardware.

hmm I don't remember what my parts cost for my computer but I got my entire computer for $500 in July 2004 so the parts weren't expensive.

Well, what I paid and what it's going for now is two totally differant subjects.
I paid $425 for my 7800GT when they first came out.....now its like $275.

I paid about $500 for a 6800 Ultra, though I probably should of just gotten a 6800 GT an overclocked it. Live and learn.....
You will laugh, but the most expensive hardware I got is my USB infrared wireless headphones [manufactured by Xdream]. Cost me two-hundred and fifty dollars. Still working great after a couple years.

My water cooling system was the most expensive piece of hardware in my computer. The cost of all the individual pieces that make up my water cooling unit runs over $400.

I paid $620CAN taxes in for my BFG 6800GT. Talk about not getting what you paid for.

I'm not about to start adding up all my water cooling equipment............. I'd have a heart attack if I did.

I also use watercooling and I got one thing to say about it. It is a PERMANENT investment. Even though you may pay a lot, it lasts forever. You can use it again in your next computer system, then again in the next one, and again.

I use air cooling. Not sensible to spend hundreds of dollars on water cooling to cool a cpu that only costs a couple hundred. Good air cooling is only 40.
In my personal computer, the highest price item is the video card for 289.

Hmmms, let me think. What is the highest price item in my computer. Must be the CPU. Paid two hundred for the cpu.

I only asked because I saw the price you paid. I would of unloaded the card onto ebay if I got a card I didn't like.

Yeah, it was pricy at the time. If I realized the 7800GT's were out so soon after it I would have held off. It wasn't so bad for the first month, and because the 7800GTX's were launched less than two months after I bought it, the prices went down quite a bit.
I'm on my fourth 6800GT... and it hasn't blown up yet so I am content with it now.

most expensive thing I have purchased was likely my (at the time of purchase) Sony Trinitron 19" monitor. it was $500+ when I bought it...

My most expensive piece of hardware was my 6800NU at $325 with my mobo being a close second at $300. The ram I bought for this rig to begin with was $320 and talk about crap! Ugh it was terrible. Actually I've got $550 in my vid card since I got it in exchange for my 5900U that I bought a few days after it first came out and it went south on me. I sent it back to newegg and all those asshats gave me for it was $325 after prorating it to what the value on a new one was.
Before anyone starts harping on me about not sending it to the mfr. for RMA I tried. I emailed ASUS (The mfr.) about needing an RMA number and I STILL have yet to get a reply to that email. That was almost 2 years ago. So yeah after close to a month of unanswered emails I gave the hell up and returned it to newegg.

Never buy Sony products. You paying for the name, and most of the time Sony doesn't even manufacturer it's own products anymore.
Get a Samsung. They produce CRT and LCD monitors of equal quality to Sony.

I hate to tell you this but Sony is the only company that made Trinitron tubes. You could buy another brand of monitor with a Trinitron tube but you know what? Sony made it.

I said quote "most of the time", and I stand by my words. Most of the time Sony does not make their own products.
I don't buy sony either. Only because I can't afford them. Not in my budget.

Well, since he was talking about monitors and at the time he bought his monitor Sony still offered the only shadowmask monitor tubes in the business. The Trinitron monitors are the best CRT monitors made. You can buy other flat screen CRTs but they'll look like crap compared to a Trinitron.

Amen to that...
Was good for the several years I used it. Colors finally gave up the ghost, and the mask broke loos inside the tube, causing the image to curl on the bottom of the screen....
but while it worked, it was the best. When it died, I adopted a 21" Nokia monitor.. OMG!! That thing was a B-E-A-S-T!!!! Component color inputs on the back, excellent perrformance. Was just too big! Sold it off, and then got me my LCD.
Yummy, never looked back.
And before anyone calls "BS" on my component choice for "cost", my FX processors were well timed gifts. Had I purchased them, I likely would not be alive. That kind of $ on a processor is CRAZY!!
But the performance is niiiiiice! ;)

At the moment, with my rig now, the most expensive piece of equipment I have is my... well to be honest... I have no clue. I guess it would be my Sony LCD monitor that I got at a computer show for 260ish bucks because the dude said it had 12 dead pixles, which I cannot see no matter how hard i try.

I forgot about my laser printer when I responded the first time. My most expensive computer investment at a cost of around $250. My CPU was my 2nd highest price item and it was $200.

Most expensive part of my computer?
SOFTWARE! MS office2000 premium was over $800 when new (fortunately I didn't pay for it, MS gave it to me as part of an evaluation group) I now have office 2006 small business on the way a $659 value (also free from MS)
I can't begin to say how much software has cost over the years, but it far exceeds my hardware costs

Hm........for me, that would have to be either one of my M-Audio Octane mic preamps. $750 each. If you figure both of those, and the FireWire 1814 needed for them to plug into.........$2100 total.

I didn't really consider a monitor hardware I guess. My LG 26" TV would be the most expensive thing I bought then. It's a TV, but I use it more for a computer monitor then anything else :D

Just out of curiousity, why do you like PIP? Personally, I have never really found that much of a use for it, because I like to concentrate on one program at a time. I am just wondering why it is so popular. What am I missing?
madstork91
04-03-2006, 01:07 AM
because i can watch tv without diverting my eyes to a complete other screen. Rather nice actually when working on something or playing an MMO. Think about all that down time in Lineage 2... now picture a tv near your toons head.
Rob Williams
04-03-2006, 01:26 AM
Oh, so you can actually play on your PC and watch TV at the same time? I didn't realize that, but that does sound damned useful lol.
Especially in Lineage 2. God I wish I had PIP back in the day.

Hehehe... suspend reality for a sec, and follow along on my trip down the yellw brick road... if you had multiple monitors on your machine, and let's say your game of choice had the ability to put a seperate point of view on that second monitor... can you imagine if you had a point of view (say, like a rear view mirror) configured then took the 2nd video out and popped it into the PIP....
You would be damn near invincible!!!
PIP on steroids for teh w1n!!!!1111!1!
