Just finished reading this article over at Legit Reviews (http://www.legitreviews.com/article/358/1/)... and I have to say this product is freaking hilarious. A NIC... running on Linux will reduce my ping drastically?

Maybe so, but for $270US? I'd rather buy a new GPU... or set up SLI. This crap makes the AGEIA card look like a steal. For $200, you could get a -wicked- NIC if you actually had a need. Hell, set up fiber NIC's in your house for $300, then have something to brag about.

Woo, a farking blade on my network card... yeah that's fierce. How huge do you want your e-peen to be in order to slap over near $300 for this thing? Am I skeptical? Oh yeah. How a network card could be worth $270US is beyond me. The problem with most people is that they use BitTorrent while playing, or other such P2P systems. Why not turn those off when you play CS? Damn, there's an idea.

When a network card is the size of my 7800GT and has Linux on it... I really have to ask... wataf are these guys trying to pull?

No need to be democratic. At least AGEIA had some great demos to show... they promised great physics. Something people wanted.

Better pings? Please. The only people who would -really benefit are on dial-up. No piece of hardware is going to help them there.

The only reason I'd even remotely consider the Killer NIC, is if I could play friends in Australia with no noticable ping. That would be a hard one to pull off.

I agree with what you have said....

With Ageia, it offered something that I wanted. Hell, that everyone wanted. This provides somethign that I dont notice at all now. I can play anyone, on any server and my ISP can provide an acceptable ping. This could be a joke and it might very well turn out to be one but should one arrive on my doorstep for review, I would certainly take a look at it. In short though, I cannot see a need for this item, expecially for that ****ing price. thats 7900 GT range there budy and I aint passing that deal up for that card.

I swear to god, when I saw the adverts for that I thought it was a game. I never read exactly what they said as I was thinking RPG and as Rob knows I'm not an RPG guy but finding out it is a network card...jesus.

Woah now, let's not jump to conclusions yet. Maybe there is more to this Killer NIC than meets the eye that can justify the $200+ pricetag.
For example, it's named 'Killer NIC'. Maybe one of the features of this particular network card is the ability to kill people, on the other side of the network that you are connected to, by the push of a button.
Or maybe it allows you to download massive amounts of porn so quickly that your head would explode trying to keep up with the massive... pornage...?

I love the Shiv comment as well, and I also think your skepticism is smart! Fortunately, I get to play with it on a daily basis, and although it may not give you zero ping to australia, it will reduce your ping and give an advantage in online gaming (which isn't for everybody, of course).

In online gaming your 'net connection really determines your ping not your NIC. It's like this, I'm running a gigabit nic hooked up to a cable modem. Naturally the most restrictive thing in my line is the cable modem not my NIC. My NIC will have 90% of it's capacity untapped.

Where the Killer NIC will shine if it lives up to the hype is in LAN gaming where you're as near to being directly hooked up to the competition as is possible. There every advantage you can gain will be one that points you towards victory.

Those are the guys that build uber gaming rigs then run the games at DX6 settings so that they can get 1000+ FPS in CS or Quake III. They'll be the ones buying these NICs, not the home gamer playing the ocasional game online.

Tytus, in case you do revisit this tread, you might want to work on developing wireless products since that's where the home market is headed. The wired NIC is quickly going the way P4 with Netburst. Yes, at one time it was king of the hill but it got eclipsed by better technology. Now it's an antiquated curiosity that's hanging on because it's grandfathered in.

The only way that wired networking would make a huge comeback is if internet suddenly started offeing service that promised to require 100mb/s rather than 11mb/s or maybe 15mb/s of speed through your network.

Ahem. In all seriousness, Tytus I wish you luck with the product. Greg should be receiving one on release, so we will be able to find out once for all what it's all about. I agree with Matt though... a NIC is probably not the biggest problem out there. Routers are known for being the cause of so many problems, and is no doubt why D-Link released their beefy GamerLounge router. Maybe that's something you want to consider?

Yeah Alf was about the only thing I watched on tv when I was little.. Well besides cartoons. When it was over I went and played with my Legos.

Im not really that big into guns personally. But knives... 00ooo. I mean this card gets me all excited. Does it come with a handle to quickly snap that blade on? That would save loads of time for the post lan party masacre!

(by the way, I also know/believe that routers can cause problems... other things too (like 512MB of Ram!)...
